Do you think religion is a crutch used to deny the meaninglessness of life?

The truth is that no-one knows. In fact to say that life is meaningless requires belief on your part. Are you using that as a crutch to deny the possibility of something more? (Note the inherent cynicism of "meaningless of life" vs the hope of "something more")

  • Life isn't meaningless, you are a self aware creature with a body and brain to learn to use and an environment to adapt to. You have neural pathways to form, resources and knowledge to cultivate to pull from, any needs, wants, and desires to be worked on. You can even grow spiritually and become a really good person/positive karma emitter

I do think people use religion as a crutch though, usually as a way to not have to ask themselves bigger questions. I also think a lot of religious people are just indoctrinated into religion and probably don't fundamentally agree with it but do so out of a moral obligation. Some religious people also enjoy feeling a sense of superiority, and it fits them to be deeply devout.

It provides an answer anytime someone's faced with a dilemma, this is how some defense mechanisms work. Something goes wrong and they apply any religious idea in literally any way that they feel best serves them, providing an instantly gratifying shallow remedy to a problem, which exacerbates the real underlying issues because the solutions are less about their output into the universe and more about finding justifications in a past civilization's mythos.

To be more clear, I feel like being religious can easily develop mental impairments and deficits. I'm sure there are religious people out there that use their faith in a similar way to how I use spirituality, I think I work with someone who might be like that, but there's still the presupposition for all the incredulous claims by religions that makes me reserved around zealous believers

You have quotable material here, my man. I'm going to save it for a rainy day. The jump/stop thinking (with associated sticky obsessions) that many religions foster does cause limited damage to the intellect.

    • What I mean when I say that life is meaningless is that once you die, assuming there is nothing, it means anything that happened to you doesn't truly matter anymore.

      • That's not true, if you have children then their lives presumably have been shaped by you which will affect how they rear their children and assuming you deserve the title of parent this is a good chain of positive karma that lasts beyond your death

Also anything else you have going, I have a small dream of opening up an orphanage with a staff of cooks, tutors, etc that would also have some apartment buildings that could be owned by the orphanage that uses the revenue generated by the buildings, which would also cater to orphans who turn 18. If I set that up right, it could be a long standing resource for people to get an edge after having their blade break

Which planet are your ancestors from? I feel you've deciphered human communication, and social-political affairs to the fullest.

      • I have the time to really compose myself here, in real life a lot of people seem to think I'm full on retarded until I get comfortable around them. I feel like I suddenly made a noticeable improvement a few days ago though. Other people are seeming less like threats now. Even if I get fired right now I feel like I could get another job pretty quick, but I want to maintain this current job and I feel like I can handle it. I feel like I can move more freely, and that's something I've been craving.

As for the planet, I'll say Saturn. My sun sign is Capricorn, a Cardinal Earth sign, meaning of the three Earth signs it's the most vibrant, and I really resonate with Capricorn traits as core values. I spent 5 bucks on a star chart from when I was born, I have interesting gas giant signs, they depict varying social aspects. I'm still looking into it, I eventually want to paint it one day.

Very pragmatic way of thinking about it isnt it? Why choose the side with the 100% death and nothing? I want to still exsist as an entity even after my vessle fails.

Its funny how we have to be respectful of the religious. They are delusional plain and simple no different then schizophrenics. It's insane how it became something so ingrained into people that its seen as crazy to deny the existence of a almighty creater who will roast you for eternity because you broke one of it's very strict rules oh and because it loves you.

I come from a very religious background and let me tell you religion is a mental illness. I am not saying this to be edgy or to be some rebel thats what I see and its wrong that sane people enable it. So yeah religion is a crutch for weak willed people who would do some very messed up things if they didnt have a god breathing down their necks.

Life can have a lot of meanings nobody needs a god to find it.

A lot of depressed people here especially during a pandemic like this (I might be wrong) certainly when you’re enjoying life and not depressed you’ll never think about the meaninglessness of life maybe the fear of death is what you’ll be feeling

I say it's more indoctrination/brainwashing that pushes people to religion, but yes that is a reason too.

Anyone here who still doesn't recognize religion as a political movement is someone I wouldn't give a second thought to convince them otherwise. Their ignorance is enormous.

Im going to agree, the problem is people confuse the possible existence of god with the organized society-controlling institutions that worship him. You can believe there's more than just the phyiscal world while still realizing that religions are bad.

Think for a minute. Can you name all eight of your great grandparents? What about all sixteen of your great great grandparents? Very few people can. These are your own ancestors, and we're only talking about three or four generations.
My point is that no matter what you do or what you accomplish, at the age of seventy or eighty, you are going to die. In a hundred years, no one will remember you.
Sure, a few people will be remembered, but the overwhelming majority of human beings will live and die and return to the earth and no one will ever know anything about them.
There is no meaning to life.

Nihilism ain’t cool, it’s a weakness. There isn’t an objective meaning everyone needs to work towards fulfilling but that doesn’t matter, it’d be unfair anyway. Do what gives YOUR life meaning. What you do does mean something, even to at least one person, literally everything has effects even in the smallest ways. You could make art that inspires people, invent something to make life better for others, or help others find their meaning. Happiness is what ultimately matters, but I’d say still be moral.

      • Everyone is afraid of death, but many of these religious nutjobs are so afraid, they think that their God will save them and lead them to heaven. The idea of God allows them to hold them to the delusion that they get special place after their death.

Why not have that line of thinking? Being terrified of death is natural it's the ceasing of exsistance. It's a feeling that magnified by the fact that humans can comprehend what ceasing to exsist means in the real world. So a religious belief to hold on to is a optimistic thought process.

          Stop being an arrogant dick.

Isaac Newton was a Christian. Was he weak minded? This idea that people who practice a religion are ignorant or weak-minded or naive or delusional or whatever other thing is nothing more than bigotry.
