Do you think it's okay to trace another person's art?

I won't share my opinion, but I just want to know what people think. Be honest.

just don't share it. tracing might be fun to you but it can hurt the artist. its a pain in the ass to get your stuff traced.
tracing to practice is fine, just. dont share it. looking at something and then redrawing it free-hand is referencing.

  • If you credit the original artist it’s fine

Hey man, let me ask you something. If somebody draws something and then you draw the same thing like right on top of it, not going outside the original designated art, what do call that?

  • I’ve heard tracing be used as physically going over the artists work and copying it and also heard tracing as in seeing the image and doing it yourself. So idk what the correct term is but back in High School I had to do a Georgia O’queef piece and all her weird art looked like messed up vagina so I did this one:

For something like this it’s okay to copy but give credit to the artist because it’s not your original idea. I’ve never actually traced over someone elses work and probably will never do that. I like seeing a image and redoing it this one was fun to do took a lot of oil pastel blending. It’s different if you are inspired by the image and do your own touches but not the same exact thing.

Her name sounds like O Queef so what do you expect?

      • that’s why I call her O’queef instead. Took so long to find something that wasn’t a “flower”.

          It's a little disappointing.

For study only. But be clear it's for study. This is not an option in your poll though.

For actual work; no. if you can't be bothered to make art of your own then why are you even being an artist in the first place. Not to mention that it's disrespectful to those who are actually trying.

  • Tracing is ok as long as you don't share it and don't claim it as your own/give credit to the artist.

Artists put a lot of work into their stuff, and stealing or copying/tracing is taken very seriously in the art community.

I think it's okay if they're learning how to draw something in private. If they're tracing someone's work and passing it as their own(even if they give the original artist credit), it just tells me that not only can they not do anything original for themselves, they also suck as an artist.

If you credit the original artist and have permission, then yes

It would depend upon your intentions.

  • I don't care

It just depends. Back when I sucked a lot more at drawing I’d trace and then watercolor paint on whatever I drew however I wanted to. However, I never used another artists art, I’d just trace over real peoples faces, or use screenshots of cartoons. I think if you’re directly using somebody else’s work and claiming it you’re that’s pretty weak. But, I don’t trace anymore anyways because that’s cheating ha
