Do gullible people deserve to go to hell?

If you're a well-intentioned person but have been mislead into false beliefs resulting in evil actions that hurt others, will you go to hell?

There is evidence from all cultures, religions, and areas of the world going back thousands of years that there is some kind of heaven and hell. That evidence is from people who survived near death experiences; and studies have shown that such people often can tell details of what is happening in the hospital or other place when they would not be conscious of what was happening.

However, I'm not sure I can tell you what determines which direction you go other than living a good life and treating other people well likely goes to heaven; and at least the extreme of treating other people very badly likely goes to hell.

I do not buy the concept that just saying "I believe in Jesus" by itself at the end of your life is a "get out of hell" card. I think there has to be more than just that (but it sure sounds good as marketing PR). Also, it ignores all the other religions in the world where "heaven vs hell" near death experiences have been reported. So what is required must apply to all religions in the world.

As far as the OP's question: If your actions in life have headed you to heaven, or hell... then I don't thing being gullable by itself will make much a difference.

An interesting question is why were you gullible. Could one of the key test be how well you researched something to validate its likely truth before taking actions on something? I don't know the answer to that.

I do know that I disassociate myself from people who will not do a reasonable amount of effort to find what is likely the truth.

That's a respectable opinion. Dispite being gullible you are still responsible for your actions. Unless in an extreme case you are mentally deficient and thus incapable of making logical decisions. It's up to god to make that judgment at the end of the day.

No, because there's no such place as hell.

Nah. You can be serial-murdering paedophile who's built up a global cocaine and heroin business that's got a turnover of a million bucks a week and you won't go to hell.

See, the thing most people don't realise is that God himself is a gullible fool. You just need to make sure that, as you bleed out on the floor of your penthouse apartment after you've been whacked by Fat Tony, you whisper, "Dear Jesus, I'm very sorry I spent my whole life doing horrible things to people. Please save me, Jesus." That's your Get Out of Jail Free card which ensures you won't go to hell.

Well, that and the fact that Hell simply does not exist.

That is a flawed interpretation of that belief system.

The idea is that the sinner is truly sorry. A bad person like you describe could only feign being sorry for their own benefit. This, for obvious reasons, can’t be kept from god. They would not be capable of repentance.

Their own nature guarantees their going there regardless of the “whisper” as you put it. Though I do agree that the “hell” concept is stupid, as useless as prison. The serial-murdering paedophile, through punishment, will only get angrier. All that he would would regret is that he didn’t kill more, out of spite for the punishment.

Few truly regret what they have done, only what they leave undone.

Your interpretation is certainly valid, but without the get-out-of-jail free card or the 72-virgins-in-paradise card, these religions would have died in less than 100 years after being established.

Does one not have an ongoing moral responsibility to highlight the shallowness of religion as Boojum has done before proceeding with serious ethical coherence of belief?

I think the cash would’ve, and did, keep those religions going. Plenty of people back then, as today, were a part of the religions without believing in the doctrine.

They’re a business that would have survived once they hit a certain level of wealth and investment. Self sufficiency at a point and armies to keep war and money flowing.

Yes. In support of your insightfulness, the lack of mass media put the marketing focus on large social gatherings, like religious services. Lack of automated production pretty much limited hard goods to plow shares and swords anyway.

Our new gods are television advertising, container shipping, and military drones; a far cooler ethos. Progress at last!!!

Yeah, dogma was a great way to easily control. But they would certainly have had no qualms about doing it the hard way had it not have been accepted. Not that it’s just them. People forget that pagans were pretty nasty to Christians early on before the push back. Push back that was enabled not so much by adhering to dogma, but clever investment.

Yeah that it is a horrid and scary reality.

Pretty sure the story goes you can do anything under the sun and not go to hell as long as you repent

I think you do go to hell in Islam but I'm not an expert so I don't know.
