Do americans really not put butter on their sandwiches?

In the UK (and a lot of Europe from what I’ve heard) you always butter your bread when you’re making a sandwich since it stops the bread from being so dry. The only exception I can think of is when your filling contains mayo since that also does the job. But apparently Americans don’t put butter on their sandwiches? Americans please advise, is this true?

    cold cuts? its hot mustard all the way

    i might put mayo on a turkey or chicken sandwich but not a lot

    full on italian coldcut sub gets oil & vinegar italian dressing

    chicken parm or meatball gets marinara sauce

    cant have a grilled cheese without butter but that seems like its a different deal

    and then theres a reuben which uses thousand island

        hotdog & burger buns are good grilled in butter too but its a bit much really

        at home i just toast em on the bbq

        plus them brioche buns are rich enough

        i can pretty much guarantee that between the lil hillbilly grocery store and hippy co-op here in the middlea nowhere that youd be astounded at the varieties of specialty spreads sauces cheeses meats beers and so on

        some of it aint cheap but someone must be buyin it all

    • it doesn’t matter how fresh/soft the bread is, any sandwich is a stodgy slog without butter or mayo. i can’t imagine eating a sandwich that is just bread and filling without butter or another wet spread holding it together - that sounds like a very sad food experience.

        You obviously have never had a variety of American Sandwiches. Sandwiches do not have to be soggy if they have not had the bread buttered. Lots of examples.

    Also, I am British and childhood experiences of disgusting, slimy butter substitutes put me off buttered ham and cheese sandwiches for life.

      I cant believe it's not butter and margarine are both sacrilege for my area.

      Real butter is about as cheap as you can find. To go for the alternative (for price reasons) is insulting.

      A school tried to use margarine instead of butter. That shit got shot down quickly.

    Many different spreads are used for different types of sandwiches. I can't think of a lot that go dry. Mustards of various types (Dijon, honey, etc), mayo is used a lot and has various flavorings you can buy, I've seen people use cream cheese, etc.

    Americans are very diverse with their sandwich choices lol. Our food definitely isn't bland. We have a lot of options, which is probably why butter isn't our first thought when it comes to sandwiches.

    Butter on toast for breakfast is common though. But on a bagel? Only if we are out of cream cheese. And of the cream cheese, I prefer the jalapeno cream cheese to go with my jalapeno/cheese bagels! Nothing else!

      ive never seen a jalapeno cheese bagel but ou can be sure if i ever had i woulda bought it

    I don't use butter in my sandwiches. Things like mayo, mustard, dressing, or barbecue sauce are my go to choices.

    I normally just eat bread with butter as is. Butter doesn't really taste all that good in sandwiches.

    It depends on the sandwich. Some are made with buttered bread. Many are not. The vast majority of the sandwiches that are not made with buttered bread do not have soggy bread,

    • How much is butter in the US these days? Converted we pay about $3.50 for a 8 oz tub in the UK which is pretty pricey but we’re in a recession right now

        I live in wisconsin so our dairy products are cheaper than the rest of the country. A pound of salted butter is like a 1.50$

        And a gallon of milk being 3$

        Every where else besides Hawaii itll be probably a dollar more. In Hawaii it's way more expensive. Tourist homes or dairy? Tourist won that battle.

          Wow! I can't believe that butter is cheaper in the US than it is here. The average income here is 751.289$. And the milk!! No surprise that we struggle to make ends meet.

          But then, we do not produce a lot of milk and we do not produce butter and we are in the middle of nowhere!

I’m very jealous. that’s also 50 cents more for that much milk in the UK, though I suppose that’s the price you pay for wisconsin being not much else other than the dairy capital lol. though maybe i’m mistaken and wisconsin is actually exciting, i’ll let you be the judge.

          i’m still shocked at how much cheaper butter is in america though, i’d much rather pay $3 for a pound than $7 at the absolute cheapest

            Wisconsin is boring. The midwest is where you go when your dreams are dead and you want to have a financially stable life. Not going to see fantastic views but you are also not going to get bankrupted buying basic shit. Unless you are super poor and you choose to stay where there are only crap jobs.

            Midwest is highly affordable to set up shop and live out your days. Just gets boring if you dont like the outdoors. Excitment is the price for stability.

            Just got to choose between. Suburban small town, rual town, ghost town, and big city living. The two at the end will be where you will find the highest concentration of poor.
