Can i eat creamed smoked roe 3 years past "best by" date

I'm debating whether to eat this Swedish product "Kalles Creamed Smoke Roe" that I've had in the fridge for 4 years. The tube is sealed and it looks like it has a lot of preservatives. The ingredients are: sugar salted cod roe, rapseed oil, sugar, potato flakes, tomato paste, salt, potassium sorbate, ascorbic acid.

Should I try a little first and see if I get sick? Throwing it out is not really an option if it's still edible.

Feed it to the cat. Or local wildlife. They will thank you for it, and you won't be risking your health. Problem solved.

This is how I developed a symbiotic relationship with local wildlife. I feed them throughout the winter and spring. They started bringing me snacks (fruit and nuts) in the summer and autumn. It's amazing, and I never saw this coming when I started sharing my lunch, and then leftovers, with local wildlife.

    • They can find their own food. Seafood is a luxury to them, they didn't earn it.

Can food has a suprising long shelf life. Check the date on the can.

'Best by' is different than use by, I'd open it and sniff/taste test

Sure you can. You can do whatever you want to. it's not wise, but you can still do it.

Oh sure...the expiration date on seafood is merely a suggestion.

I only buy outdated, discount seafood & it's not once interrupted my continuous bouts of diarrhea & vomiting.

I'd toss it. I remember once using unopened refrigerated barbecue sauce two years past the due date and getting sick. I don't mess with shit like that anymore.

    • Can't you tell if it's gone bad? BBQ sauce is almost entirely sugar, I don't see how that could go bad.

Sugar gets bad. Are you going insane? Bacteria loves sugar.

NO! Not unless you want to make yourself very sick. Best by dates are on there for a reason and in the case of seafood should be taken literally.

What are your health insurance coverage and/or local A&E / ER waiting times like, and is there anyone in your home who could drive you there?

    • If I eat a little bit at first it won't be that bad.
