Can a society exist without laws?

Apparently back in the 1800's the town I lived in had a different name and was supposed to be a lawless utopia. After like 80 years, it apparently fell apart and eventually it was reshaped into the town I live in now. I wonder if it wouldlve lasted if things were done differently. So... Can a society exist without laws?

I was thinking about this when the cop reform stuff was actually about cop reform and not changing names of brands that people don't like. So I've said this whole thing before but it kind of applies here

Laws don't prevent anyone from committing crimes, they just serve as a rule that the person broke so they can be punished for doing things we don't want them to do like stealing and killing. Figure if all the cops disappeared, and there was no street-level enforcement of laws, what law would you break?

You can rob a house, but you could get shot
You can rob people on the street, but you might get beat up and they might not have any money
You can kill someone, but you might fail and their family might come after you.
You can rape someone, but rapists don't care about laws anyway and most people aren't rapists
You can go to a school playground and sell drugs, but you might get beat up and your drugs stolen.

So the reason not to commit most REAL crimes (not jaywalking or smoking weed) is either because of moral reasons or because you're afraid of direct consequences from the people you're committing crimes against, or because most small crimes aren't very profitable. If you legalized crack you wouldn't see an increase in the number of crack smokers because nobody on earth who doesn't smoke crack is abstaining just because it's illegal.

The ideal society is completely libertarian and has an absolute minimal government. McDonald’s owns the police force and Coca Cola owns the military.

      So, oligarchy basically?

Maybe if it was a small close knit town and didn't allow outsiders in. Definitely not all of human society though. I don't mean to be cynical but it's human nature to be selfish and violent, even if most people are kind and decent most of the time.

  • All societies have laws, even if they aren't written. You like in one that doesn't say you can't murder but some dude goes around murdering residents then that community is going to punish you.

It is true, people are going to make rules themselves if none are set, the hive mind, strongest member etc. At the moment no law really exists, it is just who has the most money/power

I think drugs should be decriminalized. But idk about lawless... we could get rid of alot of stupid laws tho, like dont eat cheeseburger while u drive law. Or even prostitution or whatever. But there has to be punishment for theft and serious things like murder and rape

Of course not, human beings are not born inherently good or bad, so they need to be socialised and guided through rules and laws. Without the structure they’d act like weirdys and werewolves.
