Business vs fame? please give advice

Hey guys, so I’m a teen and I’ve recently started my own business and it’s been very successful. I’ve worked on it daily for months, it’s my passion, and it’s been keeping me really happy and confident. However, I recently came to the realization that this business isn’t going to last forever. The product I sell isn’t going to be popular forever and soon I may be back to where I was before. Another girl I know is starting a YouTube channel about fashion and is also becoming successful that way. I feel happy for her, but I can’t help but compare our journeys. Yes, I am earning money, but my product will likely become less popular in a few years, while fashion will always be popular and keep growing. In a way, I feel like the hare from the tortoise and hare story. She’s really talented at what she does, and YouTube is also something that she can likely keep up in college, while my business takes up the majority of my time. I feel a little jealous because I want people to get to know me as well instead of just looking at my products. A lot of youtubers become famous and that’s something I want as well. I see so many comments under her videos about how she’s inspiring and has such good fashion and she’s their favorite YouTuber. I want to be famous for me and not just my business. Im really stuck right now because I know if I started YouTube I wouldn’t be as successful as her. I know jealousy is wrong but I want to do better so please leave your advice.

TLDR: I run a successful business but I feel jealous of another girl who is doing fashion on YouTube because my product isn’t going to last forever, but fashion will.

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

Look at viva la dirt league. They post and show what they make. They then put it all back in the show. Ot wasny until recently they actually started making money. Before hand when they were still quite popular they were only getting like 500 on a very good month. YouTube doesn't like to put out. This is years after hard work and dedication. She's just another chick showing clothes

The fact that you can already run your own business is great, if it doesn’t last forever take your experience and set up another one.

In terms of your friend, the chances of becoming a big name YouTuber are minuscule. Even if she manages it people’s attention spans are shorter than ever and cancel culture is rife. The fashion industry will always be around but the idea that being a fashion YouTuber is a long term career option is misguided, I struggle to think of any big YouTubers from 2009 who haven’t faded into obscurity or fallen into disgrace.

Basically you’re on the right track, you’re not a hare peaking too soon, ironically that’s a good description for teenagers enjoying a spot of online fame, if anything you’re a tortoise.

The short answer: stick to business, and if given the opportunity become famous as a side effect.

If you are able to manage a business during these times you have a lot to show for your success. I hear your concern about the business becoming obsolete, but I would focus on expanding your product line within the same business. For example, there are more versions of the iPhone than I can count on my fingers. That is a business using innovation to maintain relevance. Not to mention the chances of succeeding in business (I’m including employment with another company here as well as running your own show) is far stabler than internet fame. Celebs seem to lose their appeal after a certain age.

Let’s take a good example which touches on all of your points: Iris Apfel. She is old as dirt, I would consider her semi-famous, and she is a designer. How does she stay in it? She has strong business sense. She innovates. She sells. She offers fashion lines which are recognizable and unique.

Being successful in business also often brings fame. Elon Musk. Bill Gates. Steve Jobs. To achieve that type of fame you need to hit a niche market with the best products anyone has to offer, market it globally (Adsense, SEO, email newsletters, website), and seek PR opportunities. It is not at all easy. But fame through business carries far less risk should you fail to reach that level. Capitalism rewards those best who are more than just a pretty face.
