At what point should we let natural selection do its job?

I was just thinking, at what point is one’s quality of life not worth living. Personally, physical deformities are not a problem and I believe anyone missing limbs or are not formed normally can life a fulfilling life. I am talking more along the lines of mental deformities.

There was this kid who was in the same grade level as me from kindergarten to end of high school who was confined to a wheelchair because he couldn't walk, talk, or do much of anything other than make weird screech noises. I would watch the social workers who were with him 24/7 and they could never get him to respond to them properly. (His special ed class shared the same room as my special ed class most school years). He often smelled as if he had a diaper that no one wanted to change. I wondered if he was ever happy, or if he lived a life of abuse and neglect.

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

I think euthanasia should be an option for this type of situation tbh. Everyone in the comments is daying how everyone should be allowed to live and shit but let's be honest, would you like to spend the rest of your life unable to move or communicate or do anything?

The problem is that if someone is at the level where they can't communicate well, how do you know if their life is worth living or not? That guy could have been very happy, as maybe his mental disabilities made him blissfully unaware that he was sitting in his own shit. Maybe he spent all day daydreaming about birds and flowers and then enjoyed his food and dinner time and then wanked with cheerful abandon at bedtime?

I'm not saying that this is definitely the case. He may well have felt like a prisoner in his own body. He could have been thoroughly miserable. This is probably more likely.

I'm just saying that we really have no idea. Makes it a very hard decision. I have no idea what the right thing to do is.

This guy is actually more pathetic than I am. It is a relief to know I am only the second most miserable person in the world. Yay.

I would rather have my body left in the middle of nowhere to feed to the plants and wildlife but I doubt that will happen

Why not? If you are dead, what good are they gonna do in a box in the ground? Or worse, burned to a dusty powder?

Theres stories of doctors being quick to give up on dying patients to harvest their organs. Hospitals make tons of money off your organs. Its a conflict of interest. Look into it. Its very common.

I made my dad take himself off the organ donor list.

I want a DNR tattoo too! But unfortunately, in the states, it's not valid. You have to have it on a written document.

ok :) btw I think everyone should be allowed to live. I get what you're saying, for example with the guy in special ed you knew. The problem is we can't safely determine whether or not he is happy with his life or not.
And we definitely can't kill people just because we THINK that they mights be unhappy.

        • Yeah. Doctors told my parents that there was a high probability (like 90%) that I would be born with autism. Thankfully I do not have autism and glad they didnt listen to his prediction and abort me... I do have other unforeseen mental dissabilities (ADHD and OCD) but I manage fine.

doctors since at least 20 years tend to use the word "autism" very loosely. Just any kid they can get in their office they slap that label on.
Of course once we are over 18 we automatically have diabetes, then over 60 it is copd.

That is to say that your mental health is just fine.

I'll never support outright killing anyone but convinced murderers.

That said...there are some situations where the person is better off dead. Or at least, everyone else is better off with them dead. Unfortunately, I can think of no way to even say it's okay to deny someone medical help to stay alive, no matter how awful their life will be, without it becoming a slippery slope.

Stuff like that should definitely be prevented as much as possible, at the very least.

  • I think that people like pedophiles, rapists, murderers etc. all bad people are actually like that because of genes (not only that though, it's also enviroment and mental state, memories etc.)

I think it can skip multiple generations... Not dad to son or grandad to son, it could be great great grandads genes etc.

When it comes down to pyshical disablities, I think it's disgusting that some people think letting someone be born knowing that they have a deformity, yet you may call me wrong for having that opinion... People are allowed to abort perfectly healthy babies but OH NO I'm not allowed to think that unhealthy babies shouldn't be born.

    • Brain scan should be done to detect brain activity, then again brain activity could suggest they are trapped in their mind, or it could be heaven, or they are in a constant dreaming state.

Also if the person has been deaf and blind and paralysed their whole life, the person in that head is not a human because they haven't lived in our world.

It would be kinder to just assume that once a person cannot survive that they aren't meant to...

I know ive heard that one before but theres been plenty of cases where ppl report still being conscious at the time they showed no brain activity. Some people even have reported conversations the doctors had with their family right infront of them. I remember one case where he said he heard his family discussing whether they should pull the plug or not.

It is hard to know if those with serious mental disabilities are happy or how they see the world.

I kind of hate to even ask this but for those with severe mental handicap like the OP mentions, why even bother putting them through the school system?

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • I agree, but where is the line drawn between vegetable mush and mentally handicapped when science can only go so far rn in predicting the likelihood of one being born all mushy

        • Exactly! I do not know how mushy and vegetative that kids’ brain is, but it would definitely not be a pleasnt life to be trapped in a usless vessle, not able to even think properly. Maybe he is actually a smart person with no way to communicate, but we will never know.

Er... I'm pro-choice and all, but you'd rather not exist than grow up poor? Unless you mean "third world country poor," then I'd say you're overreacting.

      Comment Hidden ( show )
    • Being aborted if the person was to live a life of starvation and constantly near death, yes I agree.

Being poor, just not having that much in life, no, because I've seen people in third world countries who are 10x happier than me.

        Acoster.
        You're highly opinionated.
You think sexual assault or murder is genetic?
You think abortion is wrong if the object may be viable.
You're ok with abortion if the result is a retard or grows up hungry.
        Any other opinions.
I'm having a hard time keeping up with your inconsistencies.
