Are you for or against new zealand changing it's name to aotearoa?

Are you for or against New Zealand to change it's name to Aotearoa to respect indigenous people?

And are you for other countries changing their names too? Do you think America should be Turtle Island again to respect indigenous people too?

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

I think the whole thing is dumb, but hey, they can change it if they want. It's really none of my business. XD

The indigenous peoples no longer rule the country. Their opinions on what it should be named are irrelevant.

Hey hey. You're opinion on the topic of rape is irrelevant, but there you were a couple of days ago giving your opinion on it.

how is it a good thing? Back in the day, Maori were told they weren't allowed to speak their native language in school, land was stolen from them and still have to deal with racism in 2022. Tell me how is colonization a good thing.

Objectively speaking, one culture has to be the best culture. It only makes sense that the best culture is spread to the whole world.

Also, why would I care about some people's native language? While it would be terrible for it to be lost to history, the world is much more convenient when everyone speaks the same language, and I say this as someone who translates things for fun.

The land belongs to the current government and no one else. This modern concept of "private land ownership" is a false one.

Racism is an inevitability that has nothing to do with colonization. It is bound to happen when two different races are made to coexist.

I'm from New Zealand. It's the first time I've seen a New Zealand related post. I think we should keep the name New Zealand. Let us solve the Auckland housing crisis first. Changing flag, name, etc is a waste of time. What's wrong with the name anyway? Moreover, there are debates about the origin of the name Aotearoa itself. It's true that I love the name Aotearoa, but changing it to simply Aotearoa is not required. The name of a country doesn't change its independence, freedom, politics, etc. And everyone knows us as New Zealand. It would be a big and almost unnecessary change. I myself prefer using Aotearoa and New Zealand interchangeably, and sometimes Aotearoa New Zealand, I don't think we need to change our country's name. There's another option. Can we be the first country to have two names at once? That'd be cool. In conclusion, I want to say that I don't want to get rid of the name New Zealand, although I also love the name Aotearoa.

It isn't because all of the Maori people in new zealand will most likely defend this decision while all the white people will cry over it.

To be entirely honest, I don't really care what countries are called. The United States could change its name to Donkey Dickland and I'd say "Okay." As long as the people living there seem to be okay with it, I don't care.

    I'm Maori.
Both of my parent's are full Maori.
I think it's great that our country is Re-gaining back what belongs to us indigenous People. It's always meant to be Aotearoa, however colonizers turned it into a land only white people would call it.

Well the native people were never conquered there and hold a great level of respect in their culture and national identity so that makes sense. I mean Zealand isn’t new anymore anyway so the name is a bit outdated

I don't know much about new zealand. But in America the native americans were never like American citizens or anything. They were seperate nations that were conquered. We now give them a right to vote and ability to leave their nation to join ours out of respect. I dont really feel like they participated much in the building of the country. They had some influence but again as seperate nations.
