Are psychiatrists con artists?

Theree is zero evidence anywhere on the planet that mental disorders are caused by imbalanced serotonin or dopamine.

If you have headache and paracetamol helps it doesnt mean your paracetamol levels were low right? So taking pills to alter serotonin levels doesnt mean you had low serotonin. If that was the case everyone would be cured right? These pills are just glorified sedatives, tranquilizers, placebos and mind control. Were going down the completely wrong path.

Theres no evidence anywhere but people still jump down my throat when I say this stuff. Am I wrong?

You were conned into feeling that it helped you, or else you would be able to identify what was actually done.

I was talking about "therapy" not the medication. But the same goes for medication. You can't say what they medication did. You are only able to express how you feel about taking the medication. That is brainwashing. And that is how we know it's bogus.

From what I've heard nobody who says therapy and medication have helped are able to be specific.

I too find that pharmaceuticals of psychotropic variety help me veryy much. Scientology on the other hand is a scourge.

The psychiatrist-phobia of the Scientologist is something they got from their founder. Hubbard was clearly a lying fantasist with serious mental issues all through his life, and he was almost certainly certifiable towards the end. Even though he was totally froot-loops, he retained enough sanity to know he was nuts, so psychiatrists were always seen as a threat by him.

      • We all have to hit that deductible number first, which can be thousands of dollars. Go to Cuba and the same drug may cost less than a dollar without any insurance. Now why is that?

It's called research and development and the cost of getting approval from a fucked up bureaucracy.

When you steal shit, like Cuba, you can sell it real cheap from the back of a truck.

          • Where are they “stealing shit” from, it’s an island nation that imports 85% of its resources to make their own drugs or have them manufactured primarily in China. Cuba has a first world healthcare system.
Look at the medication you take, it’s probably manufactured in India, but under an American brand name.
There is no transparency between R&D and when those costs are recouped through overpriced sales, and those same drugs are protected from being made into generics by a patent that lasts 10 years.

Nor should there be "transparency", you fucking communist. If a company develops something, that extends your life, or makes it better, them they should charge, whatever the fuck they want.

They shouldn't have to give it to you for cost.

An island nation can steal a trade secret and have mother russia make it. Can't they.

Did you forget the rest of the world exists?

Don't you claim to be Australian? Health care and medications are (mostly) affordable here. Didn't you know that? It's entirely possible, thus, evidence that it's not simply a matter of research and development, and far, far more about government and greed (yes, I read the bit where you said "fucked up bureaucracy...but you say it like that's a reasonable excuse and there's nothing else at play).

            Ever heard of Canada?

            No?

what are you talking, there's tons of evidence depression stems from brain chemical imbalance. Brain chemicals are responsible for our feelings.

The human brain is very complicated. He's right. They think this and they think that but they have no concrete evidence. They even state that they don't even know exactly how those drugs work. Just that sometimes they do and sometimes they don't.

Yeah that's what I thought too, if serotonin levels were solely to blame, medication to alter serotonin levels would work immediately. Meds can take months to have any effect, if they have any effect at all, which they often don't.

Because pills are not a long term solution. Any doctor or therapist who claims they are is a liar and should be run from.

Medications are tools to assist with healing (yes, I no word good. I'm tired).

I've injured my back recently. Ibuprofen (to use IINs new drug of choice...hah) doesn't heal the cause of the pain. It makes the pain bearable, reduces inflamation, and allows healing to occur (if the correct physical treatment is followed).

Anti deps assist your brain chemically. It's still necessary to receive treatment until the mental illness is under the control of the patient. I took them for 18mths, alongside weekly CBT treatment, which challenged my negative thought patterns, gave me coping strategies, etc etc. Am i cured? No. I still have depression. Depression is a life long thing. But it is effectively controlled, and I haven't taken SSRIs for...seven or eight years.

I'm probably too biased to give a fair argument tbh xD I was forced to take meds for years, they made me feel like a rusty, upside down trolley in a river. Only started feeling better when I decided it was getting ridiculous and stopped taking them.
Anyway, I'm glad they do help some people.

That's awful. I honestly hate that people receive "care" like that, and I'm sorry it happened to you. I can totally understand your views, that given.

Like anything, medication is going to affect everyone differently, and some medications just will not work on some people. And sadly, there are so called medical professionals who don't care enough to do the right thing and go into it properly.

              I'm glad you're feeling better.

I've tried about all of them. I had all the side-effects but zero benefit for anxiety or depression. I found that for me, exercise worked better than any drug they could throw at me. Now schizophrenia and bi-polar disorder are another story. They know for a fact that they're caused by chemical imbalances and all the exercise or counseling in the world won't help it. But they still don't know what those imbalances are. Perhaps one day they will have the answer to mental illness. Right now, all they can do is throw stones at it.

In some ways probably, but I also think they know what they are doing. Furthermore, some mental disorders aren't disorders within themselves, but some people wait so long to get their issues taken care of that those once small-ish issues actually do become disorders. This is not to say that disorders don't exist.

I would say in some ways deviation is natural, but it's not normal. Had we not learned to set laws and rules as a society, many of us wouldn't know how to live. But the fact that many gay people refer to themselves as tops or bottoms and stuff like that should say there is some considerable sexual or identity confusion

Psychologists an psychiatrists are facilitators, they are only as good as the effort you put forth.

If a doctor sets a broken arm and you cut the cast off and play tennis, it doesn't mean he is a quack when your arm hurts again.

Same with these medical fields. If you continue the same behavior, nothing will change.

I agree, there is evidence that dopamine and serotonin levels effect people's moods, and there's evidence that certain drugs effect the levels. But there's no evidence that it'll automatically effect everyone's levels. I agree with what you say about the money and return visits though.

If anything, the fact that meds help some people and not others could indicate some physiological differences. Not all cases of mental illness are thought to be derived from chemical imbalances. Psychiatry is also talk therapy and meds combined or sometimes just talk without meds. What we do know is that some people find great relief from medication.
Of course there are good shrinks and bad ones. And they can make mistakes as well.
It doesn't make sense to say there is no proof and therefore they are cons.
I understand your point but you would need to prove it for me to agree with you.
And still I would not have an issue with people taking medication that helps them even if it is more analogous to taking painkillers than restoring a chemical balance.

In my experience I've had very bad therapists but for some people I hear it is very helpful. I think as long as nobody is hurt it doesn't matter exactly what the meds are doing or what their levels of neurotransmitters are. They are seeking emotional relief and for some the medication helps.

  • They work for some people but aren't a cure.
I took medication for years, but quit taking them this year.
Honestly I feel fine off them most of the time. The only reason I took them is other people around me want me to take them and don't seem to like me off them, which kind of sucks because I feel they like me sedated and not how I am normally.
I don't actually notice much difference, but most people around me comment. Nobody likes to live or work with me. People are scared to drive with me. I have wreaked my truck 3 times this year. The girl living with me moved out after I asked her if she was a serial killer in a way that probably sounded like a complement. People comment they don't like how I am in public but I don't really do anything bad and have excellent self control. I am unable to pinpoint whatever is going on but know something is causing me social problems. I am diagnosed with aspergers, which isn't really a disability or mental illness and the meds don't do anything for that. I also seem to have some kind of co-morbid mental imbalance, which is common for aspies. I only really notice it because how others react to me and often seem to not know what I am talking about while I do not get their perceptions either much of the time. Many things that are normal to me apparently are not to most people. So I took pills to sedate myself so I could blend into society better, but I got tired of doing it.
