Zombie apocalypse scenario: what weapon would you choose?

Background: It's your run-of-the-mill zombie apocalypse. The city is infested with zombies and there are barely any survivors left. You are alone and come across an abandoned hardware store. There are lots of weapons in there but each weapon is in alarmed-glass casing. You immediately realize that you can only take one weapon because as soon as you break that glass and that deafening alarm sounds, you'd have to slip out the backdoor or the zombies will feast on your loins.

- Assume you have no experience with any weapon.
- Each gun comes with ammo that gives you 150 bullets, except for the crossbow which has 10. But will you retrieve the used bolts from your kills?
- (S) means the weapon is silent

What weapon would you choose? Explanations and reasoning for choice will be appreciated.

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • Go with the pistol. Light, silent, easy to learn and relatively popular (but would the alarms really work if the city is in a state of carnage? The electric grid's probably down... Just take everything)

Even though the shotgun is tempting, the range and volume of it is rather dissuading.
Crossbows are hard to use AND you have to consider whether or not you can safely retrieve the bows.
Sniper rifles would be great if you had another weapon.
AK47 is hard to learn and finding ammo can be difficult.
If you're using a run and gun situation with the MP5, it's safe to assume you won't last long.
Using a machete will probably fuck you up in the long run - what will you do if a horde's running towards you?

Grabbing the closest weapon is still advisable over not grabbing any. Although, the best strategy will probably be to barricade the front doors, fuck the alarm and take everything.

    • The zombie apocalypes is here now and your the zombies! Your all slaves by tacit consent, your food, water, & air, are poisoned but your too busy working/slaving, playing games, staying high to escape this truth that you ARE the zombies. Don't take my word for it go look for yourself if not a zombie. Peace

    • Can't thumbs-up your comment more than once.

If there ever is a zombie apocalypse I'm hunting your ass down to team up with, good sir.

  • Zippo!

  • Ay, amateurs, you gotta fuck it all.

Barricade the front doors, whip out the AK47, use it to shatter the rest of all the glass casing, take everything and gtfo.

  • Maybe we just need to show the zombies some love.

  • Oh I'm all over this question! Fucking love zombies!!

I probably wouldn't choose any of the weapons in glass casing, both because it's not worth the risk of attracting zombies and because I've never fired a gun or operated a crossbow. Limited ammunition is also a drawback, although the crossbow would be optimal choice out of what is listed (so Daryl Dixon).

I'd probably shop around the store for various bludgeoning instruments- close range is the only drawback there, but you gain cause it's a silent kill.

I'd root around for other supplies too, including duct tape to protect my extremities from zombie bites.

If I could fashion a motherfucking Max Brooks' "lobotomizer" that would be ideal.

      • Twinning. Now I just want to know who the fucking fuck you are, my OP doppelgänger.

        Comment Hidden ( show )
    • Bludgeoning? That's awfully draining on your stamina. You've also got to consider that shattering a skull is harder work than it looks. Plus, you run the risk of having your weapon get caught inside a corpse.

      • Very good point. Upper body strength would be key. That's why I would choose a weapon that could maximize leverage and take the least amount of effort- like a tire iron (which could be used for other purposes like B & E) or even a baseball bat with nails in. Too me, a gun would be a weapon of last resort unless I was in a rural area because the noise would just attract more zombies.

        • True, guns can be noisy, but the OP listed several silent guns. Why not grab a bludgeoning weapon to shatter the alarmed glass and take one with you?

Seems like killing two birds with one stone.

    "....stuff...and things..."

  • Are they fast zombies (World War Z) or slow zombies (Return of The Living Dead)?. Is there a Licker near by?. How close is the Witch? I don't want to wake her. Details man! details!.

  • The power of knowledge that zombies don't / can't exist. Also, of what the word apocalypse actually needs.

    Ah fuck it, nobody cares.

    Battle Axe.

        • Haha! I think I'm catching on to your pattern. Let me try to speak like you:

Everyone boasts about their accomplishments in life but I won't do that about mine.

  • Got to go Shotgun. Most common ammo.

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • A crossbow (and no, not because Daryl from walking dead uses one) being able to retrieve ammo would be an invaluable asset in a situation where you have to pick off zombies from a circumstantial distance, however in all honesty I would try to avoid the dead at all costs and would preferably have a crowbar or have both given the opportunity. A crowbar would be the single most effective tool in the field; durable and possesses a range of uses from opening jammed doors to smashing skulls.

  • Shotgun. There would be far less zombies converging on me at one time than there would be in a video game or on TV, so the noise probably wouldn't get me into too much trouble provided I'm not firing it constantly. If each shot is capable of killing multiple zombies, that also gives it the best ammo economy. It's also a long gun, so I can use it as a club in a pinch.

Take the shotgun, hoof it to a convenience or grocery store, barricade myself in with the food until either help arrives or the zombies all die.

  • Shotgun. For one thing I'm not marksman so close range is a given anyway. Also depending on what kind of zombies we're dealing with I'm not confident putting a few bullets in one will stop it. But blowing a big chunk out of it will surely at least disable it.

  • Well, I suppose a machete is bigger than a steak knife. Though, I'm not sure it would fit well between my fork.. It sounds complicated. I'm sticking with muh trusty steak knife. Unless you have a plate? It's so barbaric to just eat it off the ground like I've been..... =<

  • Between a crossbow and a machete. Despite what The Walking Dead shows, crossbows do make quite a bit of noise which wouldn't be too great in a zombie apocolypse, so probably a machete. especially if I was in such a tight situation as I could only take one weapon and zombs are around the place, I won't get far with a crossbow with one bolt and have to reload each time while surrounded, where as with the machete I can slice and dice, it's reusable, and you can sharpen wood to make more less durable weapons.

    1. Machete.
    2. Crossbow.

  • It has been definitively determined by the majority on the sailing forums that Zombies cannot swim. Therefor, living on a boat, as I do, I don't have a lot of need for a weapon to defend myself from Zombies.
However, we do get tired of fish every day of the week, so if you don't mind, I'll take that old Winchester Mod. 94, 30.30 carbine, lying in the corner over there to get a pork or beef every now n then, OK?

  • Why do I have to assume I have no experience? Ruined.

Unless I have relatively easy access to additional ammo the obvious choice is the bow.
