  • Although I do find some tattoos to be aesthetically pleasing, I do not believe that is a good reason for me to get a one.

I don't like tattoos which are referential, quotes, indicative of your interests, names, faces, etc. You shouldn't use your body as a profile page. Why not just talk to people about your interests, socio-political leanings, and beliefs?

As a purveyor of art I don't believe anything you explicitly tell a person to put on your skin is art. It is a craft. Craftsmanship is concerned with the physical skill it takes to create a piece. Whereas art is concerned with the thought behind the craft, the meaning. The only way I could justify getting a tattoo is if I go to a tattoo artist, whose work I love, and give them carte blanche. That way I will be wearing a unique artwork whose meaning, even to its wearer, will change over time.

Although I do not believe tattoos are unattractive, I do consider them indicative of the mind which bears them.
