I used to be homeless, its not all that bad depending on what state of mind you have and where you are. I was able to be employed while homeless, i just used someone else address. It was cool because I could spend all my money on pot and nice clothes instead of rent and utilities. As for showers, depending on where you are, you can just walk into camp grounds or rec centers and use there showers. I washed my clothes in a brook and sometimes bathed in it.
