I had wondered before how so many people handled the cold like 100 years ago when fewer people had decent heat and many people had to be outside more, but I'm sure most had a fire or furnace somewhere to crowd around. It was the heat back then that really gave you fewer options for relief, since there was no such thing as air conditioning yet. If people couldn't find a lake nearby to jump into or a fire hydrant in the street, there were very limited options. I know like in New York in the 1930s, I've seen those pictures of people playing in the water shooting out of the hydrants. And back in the 19th century and first couple decades of the 20th, they still had ice wagons.
you notice that cold weather makes attitudes worse?
