Wtf is a cis?!

As I scroll through my dashboard on tumblr I keep seeing text posts regarding cis. Some are "Being a straight white male/female cis, I..."

I don't even know what that means! It makes me hungry an upset that I don't know this terminology. Don't tell me to google search it either because I already did and all I got were elaborate bullshit explainations.

PLEASE! For the love of me, explain this in layman's terms! Just a simple explaination please! I'm so confused and angry I want to eat my phone!

Help me!

Oh, and so I MIGHT have a better chance of this getting approved I'd better ask-- Is it normal I feel like this?

Is It Normal?
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • Cisgender is opposite of transgender. It's often abbreviated to just "cis". It just means that your gender and your biological sex are in alignment.

I feel like a lot of people who aren't transgender don't know what cis means because the alignment of their sex and gender isn't something they often need to think about. So it's definitely normal not to know.

    • You, with the knowing of all kinds of things. Me, I didn't even know about tumbler dashboards. I still don't.

      • The only dashboard I know about is the one in my car.

      • I'm very proud of my lack of tumblr knowledge.

Now Twitter, that's something I can get all in a flutter about.

        • I'm proud of my Tumblr knowledge however, I don't view the site as all that great, harmful even in some ways. Twitter I have no idea though, so no opinion on that one.

          • I thought I was the only one on here with Tumblr! Is yours a fandom blog?

            • To be honest, I just go on my brothers Tumblr. I don't have one myself. I have some reservations about getting one. I've seen the good that Tumblr does for people but I've also seen the harm as well. I'm kinda taking a break from going on Tumblr, I got really sick of it actually. But I'm sure plenty of other people have a Tumblr on here. What's your blog about?

          • I really like Twitter, even though I don't tweet very often and I've only got a small handful of followers who are almost all spambots. I suppose it's similar to Tumblr in that the point is to be able to share things quickly without having to do anything complicated. One of the differences is the range of appeal; aside from all the regular people, lots of mega-famous people use Twitter and there are a lot of people there who you can't find on any other social networking site. There's also the news aspect of it. Even if you don't follow any news sites on Twitter, lots of news will reach you as it happens through your followers. For some reason, it appeals to me more than tumblr and Facebook for a lot of things.

            • I didn't know about the news thing. I'll admit I have actually gone on Twitter just to see what some of my favorite "celebrities" are up to like voice actors, or animators. But I didn't know about the news thing. That actually sounds pretty useful and interesting.

        • Now that you mention twitter, I saw a puppy with an account making tweets lol. I haven't used mine in two years but that puppy's username is puppyawkward. He makes me laugh :)

    • I myself, feel like a clam trapped inside the body of a man. At the moment I'm taking mullusk hormones to help me produce the necessary mucous. I'm saving up for surgery needed to complete my transformation. Then I will truly be happy as a clam.

      • Haha.

At first I though you were referencing an unfunny South Park or Family Guy episode, then I latched onto your pun.

    • Wait. So normal people for some reason need to identify the fact that their gender matches their sex? Seems odd to have to bring that up.

"by the way I'm a man who feels he was born a male, hope that's not a deal breaker"

      Am I missing something??

      • It doesn't have much use in everyday conversation, but some people use it when they're trying to create an atmosphere in which transexual people are considered as normal as cisgendered people. Unlike the word "non-transexual" (or an assumption with no label at all), the word "cisgender" doesn't define transgendered people in relation to the normal part of society, but instead presents cisgender and transgender people as two distinct groups in which neither is by definition more normal than the other. It's usually used either in social science, where it's important to be unbiased, or by people who are trying to be politically correct.

If it sounds like I'm not explaining it very well it's because I don't understand it very well :P

        • It seems so overly PC that it's become offensive, now that you explained it.

          • I quite like the word because I do think it's good to be politically correct if you know how, but at the same time I definitely don't think it's important that everyone uses it or that everyone even knows what it means because most people don't exactly talk about gender identity much anyway.

          • That's actually what Tumblr is, they try to create an atmosphere free of judgement. But everyone on there get easily offended, sometimes the hurt is justified but sometimes it is not. In some ways it is great but in other ways it is not.

            • I think that's one of the things about tumblr that doesn't appeal to me. There are a lot of keyboard crusaders who will jump on anything offensive. I think that's a good thing, but I often get the impression they do it in an extremely aggressive way and with shallow and tribal motivations that alienate a lot of people from their cause. Perhaps that has its place, but it's not in my nature to be like that.

The other half of tumblr is fandom blogs, and fandom doesn't appeal to me at all because I just can't get that obsessed about anything. There are many hundreds of episodes of Doctor Who that a fandom community could work on gaining a deep understanding of, but all you seem to get is endless memes making base level observation comedy about the show. It all seems very shallow to me. The Verge wrote a good piece on fanboyism that's been doing the rounds on all my social media recently. It's about tech nerds, but you can generalise to it to all sorts of fandom and it explains quite well why to concept offends my sensibilities. http://www.theverge.com/2014/1/21/5307992/inside-the-mind-of-a-fanboy

I'm sure I'm not painting a true picture of tumblr and there are a lot of good blogs that break my expectations, but that's what I see when I gaze upon a tumble dashboard.

        • You pretty much explained it well. I actually had to have a friend explain to me what it means as well, and she pretty much described it how you said it.

      • Glad I could help. I agree that a lot of the definitions you find online over-complicate these things and make it hard to work out what the real meaning of a word is.
