Would you think less of her?

I have a friend I've known for over 10 years. I met her when she was 14, mostly she's seemed like a good person or someone that tries to be. At the very least wants to be perceived as one...

I recently found out something she's kept from everyone for a long time. When was 11 or 12, she was baby sitting some younger kids, a boy and a girl. I think the boy was her brother. She found some porno movies and watched them, then got the children to act out what she had seen on each other, and on her.

A few of our common friends feel totally different about her now. I shrugged it off, life goes on. I know this is a criminal act and she could have gotten in a lot of trouble, but are things like this, though wrong, normal?

Is It Normal?

  • ^ As a child, she would probably never have thought to do what she did either, until she watched pornography.

I have no problem with porn but I do have a problem with it being watched by children. Our sense of right and wrong is built from observing the world around us. That includes media such as newspapers, books, films, music. It's easy to say in retrospect that what she did was wrong (and it is wrong, I agree) but it's very difficult to judge the mind of an 11-year old who has just seen some new and interesting way that their body works.

I have some sympathy for a child who has seen something they really shouldn't have seen, and I would never want to demonise them based on how it appears to my adult self.

  • She was effectively a child when it happened. It can be very difficult for children to process things like pornography or violence in films. I believe people should be punished based on their foreknowledge of the harm they'll cause. In her case, it's minimal.

This isn't to excuse her; just to say that she was probably curious, and charged up by the porn that was irresonsibly left around. I think there's enough grey area to give her the benefit of the doubt.

  • if she didnt tell you then how do you know that its actually true? be a friend and tell her what people are saying behind her back. friends dont gossip about each other like that. if she doesnt want to talk to you about it then just tell her that you are there if she ever needs someone to listen.

  • Thanks for the replies. Everyone but myself and one other friend are holding this against her. There is possibly a lot more to this story, maybe she wanted to talk about it with the other person and said the most recent act, or the one she could "explain" with the porn.

I think she may have been molested before and/or done this before with the younger kids. I'm not going to talk to her about it, it was a long time ago and she is not the one that told me.

  • Um ok. I saw lots of porn on my fathers computer when I was 12. It did not in anyway make me want to act it out. Sorry but that just doesn't happen to normal children. To me it sounds like she was molested and was taking it out on those children.

  • she was just a kid and probably didnt know what she was doing and it probably looked like a lot of fun so she just wanted to try it. if she does not feel any remorse for what she did or any guilt then i would think she might have some issues but i wouldnt use it against her. i would try to talk to her and help her realise that what she did was wrong and help her get through it. that is what a true friend would do. i would think less of you for judging someone who you know to be a good person. have you never made a mistake in your life?

  • ^nope. Sorry but even as a child I would have never thought to do what she did. At that age you have a sense of what's right and wrong. I don't care what others say to that.

  • Not normal and she could still go to jail over it too. I'd think less of her.
