I always thank my wife when she cooks for us and I make it a point to compliment her when she produces something I like, but on those occasions when I find the result not very good, I tell her that. I'm not nasty about it; I still thank her for the effort, but I say I think it wasn't one of her better efforts and explain what I specifically didn't like.
