That's properly termed as "dysfunctional": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dysfunctional_family. Based on my experience, all members of the family are greatly affected when one gives a conflict. If I will one day start my own, I would try my best to bring love, care, and harmony to my family. The experience gave pain already so this indicates that it shouldn't be passed on to the next generation.
