Huge failure, given what their vision was. They wanted to create a “classless society” but the Communist part elites were almost as privileged as the Czarists compared to the common people.
And that there is the problem with socialism. The problem with government running businesses is that people run the government. And whether it is people in government or the private sector theyre both subject to greed. Communists will say the government would be run by the people because the people will control the government. How has that worked out in every single country? Less government and a economy rhat works off supply and demand is the best system.
I dont agree with laissez faire either, because if you leave businesses to their own devoces profits will rule policy, and the workers will suffer, like they did in the days of the robber barrons.
But the safe gaurd is the laws of supply and demand. Amazon cant just say tomorrow "sorry we are not paying 15 an hour anymore we are paying the federal minimum wage of 7.25 an hour" if amazon did that everyone would quit and amazon would go out of business. The market sets the wages not the companies or the CEOs. If government controlled amazon however THEY could set the wages to 7.25 because they would control the market (communism). That is the problem with communism
A successful country doesnt have walls to keep its citizens from fleeing it.
Obviously it was a failure as it's not around these days. That being said, it did help build modern Russia up as one of 3 major world powers. (Russia, China, and the United States.)
Russia isn't really a world power anymore though. Even India can claim that title more than Russia at this point.
Not really. Their Navy is largely dysfunctional and they stopped the programs to replace ships years ago.
Most of their tanks are way outdated and the Gulf War showed that the modern western tanks were extremely superior (US Tank vs Russian Tank: Shooting gallery time - and the Russian Tanks never hit a single US tank - and none had a chance to get a 2nd shot off). The do have perhaps the best new modern tank - but, they have not built many of them.
Their air force is in a similar situation as their army. Most of it is well dated and does not stand up to western aircraft. The few good aircraft they have are just too few to make a decisive difference.
Russia's military is living largely on their past capabilities... Not their existing ones.
Talk is cheap. A real head on shootout will be a huge loss for them. Not to mention that the US an its allies would cut virtually all foreign trade from Russia - and let it economically die.
Hey, don't blame me. Blame the offical studies. At worst Russia ranks at number 5 in those studies.
The fact that the Soviet Union no longer exists ought to be enough evidence to answer your question.
My wife grew up in it... She would tell you it was a huge failure long before it collapsed.
