I do think I would try very hard for this friend. I have had friends who have been very depressed before and although not exactly the same it was difficult, my friend kept trying to kill herself and evertime I would take her to hospital and notify her family, I would stay with her the whole time and beg her to get help. Eventually with a lot of help she did get better. So I don't think I would give up on "John" not easily anyway.
