Would you rather live with a totalitarianism or an anarchy?
You can choose between an theocratic totalitarian government or an anarchist society. The government is completely oppressive of its people. Homosexuals and anyone openly not following the state religion are executed. Those who are found to have undesirable ideas, such as favoring an unpopular political party, are also eliminated. However, since all things are ran by the government, there are things you don't need to worry about. Poverty is nonexistent, and all people have an equal amount of wealth, regardless of the work they do. This wealth is mostly meaningless as all property is owned by the government and there are no private businesses, so it all goes back to the government one way or another. You are guaranteed to always have your issued rations every day. You do not need to look for a job, as it is assigned to you based on the government's needs. You won't need to worry, as things will never change.
You could also live in the anarchist society. A defense force of mercenaries and the common private ownership of weapons prevents the totalitarian government from trying to take over it, as well as keeps the populace mostly orderly. It's the only way to be in control of your own life. However, nothing is guaranteed. Your success depends entirely on your work and maybe your luck. While there are kind people who may be willing to share, it's very possible you may starve to death or have to sleep in the streets. Important decisions are made by the community gathering and collectively deciding what to do. Disputes and violations of any law there may be are usually settled between the victim and offender, without a real court system. While it is not strictly defined by a justice system, people have more or less agreed on what is a crime and what the punishment is. However, because it is not enforced impartially, it's best to stay on the good side of anyone with influence or you might receive a punishment you don't deserve. It has sometimes happened that a court of respected individuals is temporarily created to solve major disputes, but things don't usually need to be resolved that way. People are free to trade goods and open businesses in the marketplace. Although there are no business regulations, having a reputation for not respecting your customers can be downright deadly, and there's already been a case of a mob destroying a business that sold bad goods and killing its owners. The anarchist society offers both a real chance at success and a real risk of dangerous failure.
In this world, there are no other options. If you're alive, you belong to one of these two states. Which one would you be in?
