I wouldn't want it. The whole thing seems pretentious to me. You can get away with it if you're a musician or other performer, but you still risk looking like a douche, particularly if you pick something you think sounds tough or cool (think "Sting"), or if you choose something that you think sounds deep, intellectual, or mysterious ("Shadow", "Raven", "Plato", "Da Vinci"). You could choose something silly and self deprecating, but no matter what you pick, you're locking yourself into a persona. That's ok for stage names or online names, since you can shed them when you're not performing or online, but for real life, it would suck. Plus, you'd be stuck with whatever you think sounds cool now, which you'll probably hate later.
Oh, I don't think it's pretentious that Plato was named Plato, I just think it would be pretentious for somebody NOW to start calling themselves Plato. Does that make more sense?
Would you like to have only ONE name?

i think with plato and people like that they only had first names, followed by the town from which they hail.

Oh, totally. I find it slightly annoying when people refer to Leonardo as "Da Vinci", actually, because that wasn't his name.
