Imagine your Parents named you McLovin and you turn out as overweight gay system administrator. You'll either be a star or never live if down. Not worth the risk.
Much more fun to go pick something for yourself and go by that. I have a short and direct nickname, which is used in work, by my friends, even my family.
Why that would be improved if i was only given that name in the first place is beyond me, the result would still be exactly the same, only when i need documents for official purposes there would be a difference.
