Yes and I think it's incredibly close minded if, in 2013, a parent couldn't bear to allow this. The equivalent is like not allowing a girl to play with cars. I loved toy cars as a kid and so did my female cousin. Sorry but any parent who thinks boys shouldn't play with dolls needs to get a grip and re-asses their priorities. Whilst I appreciate girls and boys will be more (or less) drawn to certain things, I can't stand 'over-stereotyping' of kids - society says you like this so you will like this and there will be no flexibility... how robotic.
The majority of people would let a boy play with babrie dolls.
Whilst those parents that wouldn't let them are branded as backwards, sexist and narrow minded.
What is REALLY narrow minded is saying that it's pathetic and narrow minded to want to raise you child in a "stereotypical gender role", or quite simply differently to the way some YOU want to.
I honestly think everybody here who is saying that they would let their child play with a barbie doll seriously thinks about how their child is going to be treated by other children. I guarantee they would get bullied.
Society says you will like this? No. Your natural instinct as a male says you will like these things. You think that cavemen boys were off learning how to hunt with their father because 'society said so'? No. It's because these characteristics are hard-wired into our very being. It is some of the most basic things that define us as men and women.
And then to say that it's narrow minded that you want to raise your child as an image of yourself, to become a man's man, and by doing so discourage him from playing with girls toys? Ridiculous.
YOU are narrow minded, YOU cannot see the other point of view.
But I guess that's what you get these days. I sometimes feel like there are no true men left in this world and it's just full of androgynous clones. Oooh lets all be the same, nobody do anything stereotypical, this is 2013 don't forget. How robotic.
Bring back Sinatra, Brando, McQueen, the real men of this age. The real men.
Yeah, God forbid kids be allowed to do what they want so long as it isn't hurting anyone. Your personal preference for traditional gender roles should obviously be forced onto every kid in the world, right? They don't really matter anyway, so long as your precious worldview isn't challenged.
EDIT: Your own logic suggests all men should do manly things, and by extension all pretty similar things... then you say the idea that everyone should do whatever they want is "robotic", even though that would obviously increase the diversity of behaviour. *sigh*
EDIT: "It's because these characteristics are hard-wired into our very being. It is some of the most basic things that define us as men and women". Well they're obviously not hard-wired, seeing as so many people don't conform to it, and they obviously don't define us as men and women seeing as there are so many men and women who don't conform to your ideals, and doing so doesn't mean they should change their gender just to fit your norms.
Wow. What a load of bollocks. You've completely missed the point. This is just exactly what I'm talking about. Omg, I can't even be bothered with this. Just kill yourself.
Firstly, whoever said Barbie dolls? Anyway, that doesn't matter. You've just taken what flowergirl said and completely twisted it. And what other point of view is there to see... other than one that restricts a child based on stereotypical gender roles and preferences? I know a woman who lets her son paint his fingernails at home because he sees mummy doing it. But he still plays with cars and 'boys toys'. Are you the kind of person who thinks men must have short hair and women must have long hair? Sorry, but you do come across as a bit narrow minded. Also, you can't compare caveman times to now! We sort of changed... ALOT.
Right... and whose comment has the more thumbs up? Just saying. From what I've read further down I know there's literally no point in getting into any kind of discussion with you. You will just call me names as that's what you do when people don't bow down to you. So we'll agree to disagree. Bye.
Would you let your son play with dolls?

What a fucking world we live in here:
