If you are going to do that, do it on your terms, to some extent. Pick your place to stay, arrange for other activites, arrange a public meet first etc. Then if they dont show, or are not who they say they are, well then fuck it, you will still have a great trip.
Or meet somewhere where everyone is a visitor. Less likely any shenanigans happening if they have to travel too.
