One day it may be possible for meat to be produced in laboratories. This would mean animals would no longer have to be killed for meat production. If the resulting meat was indistinguishable from normal one, would you eat it?
And now we have just had a taste test of lab-grown beef. According to USA Today, the two tasters were food writers. They reported the consistency of the burger was perfect, but the taste was kinda bland. The reason was that there was no fat. But the scientists said they were mainly concerned with the consistency/mouth feel, and that it would be easy to grow fat cells to boost the flavor. The problem now is to scale it up and make it cost-effective, which will take a lot of work.
The dairy and poultry industry isn't perfect. There are many, many cases of cows and chickens being badly mistreated, so, to some people, eating eggs, milk, cheese etc. is endorsing / funding acts which they consider barbaric.
Chickens are bred to produce unusually large eggs which causes suffering in itself, often they are kept in extremely poor, cramped and unsanitary conditions leading to disease and physical deformities (battery farms) and are mistreated (beaten, stamped on, thrown, sometimes to death) by their handlers.
Cows are bred to overproduce milk - that is they produce far greater quantities than they would in nature which means they are often in pain from swollen mammary glands, hence why they need to be milked twice a day. They are also often treated extremely badly by their handlers - stabbed, beaten, kicked, stamped on. Baby calves are taken from their mothers upon birth leading to emotional distress on the part of the mother cows, and the calves receive just as violent a treatment as the adults. Watch this:

It's not pleasant viewing, but it gives you an insight into how it is at some of the worst dairy farms.
Basically, just because eggs, milk and cheese aren't the direct product of killing, doesn't mean there was no brutality involved in their production.
that is a very good point and something not too many ppl are aware of (yet). And a lot of ppl who do know seem to live in denial of the cruel reality. I only buy free-range organic eggs and have switched to soya milk, but lately the Vegan lifestyle has really started to appeal to me as well.
I am very skeptical to how this would work. In order to get meat you need something that was living or once living. If not its simply imitation meat. So still just fake meat. If they made REAL meat in a lab it means they would be creating something living and killing consumption. So the reality of the matter is we can not get around killing for meat. What you speak of would be equal to soymeat or tofu. Not saying I am for the killing of animals but fake meat is fake meat no matter how you look at it. In fact people are meat. However I do not have to explain the draw backs of eating other people. There is a number of reasons why we can not start eating people. Noun: The soft substance consisting of muscle and fat that is found between the skin and bones of an animal or a human. I do not like fake meat. I do enjoy tofu but I do not think I could handle getting rid of all the meat in my diet. See what you propose a very nice idea but they already have fake meat like this. Its made of mostly vetebles.
