It is a good source of nutrients, specifically Iron. Childbirth depletes your body of iron and supplements just don't pack the same punch. By taking it, it helps ward of postpartum depression as well as helping you heal, in general.
You know me, I think I'm pretty open-minded but that seems so fucking weird!
I can't get my head around it.
Was it something suggested to you by someone or?
Maybe it's a commonly done thing & I'm just unaware, not having spent a whole bunch of time around pregnant ladies?
It's increasingly common. There are people who eat the placenta as is, I believe. And some who have it turned into a decoration of some sort. I forget where I saw that. I'd like to forget more :/
It isn't very common. Most find it weird. But as charlie.m stated, it is becoming more common. But it once was extremely common and other animals still do it. It is part if the purpose of the placenta. It feeds baby. Once baby is born, momma nurses baby but she needs nutrition. The placenta provides that nutrition. It's very logical to eat it.
And truthfully, there are a lot of things about pregnancy that no one talks about until you are experience it first hand.
Chicken soup isn't nutritious enough. Very little iron. And many vitamins aren't what they consider bioavailable. Meaning that the body can easily absorb and use the nutrients. Most vitamins and supplements are lost in pee before the body can break it down and use it. Food based supplements are always better. The placenta is rich in nutrients that are not found in food and works as a blood builder as well. You can get similar results with food and herbs but why take 20 things when your body makes one that will suffice?
would you eat human flesh?
