It is a good source of nutrients, specifically Iron. Childbirth depletes your body of iron and supplements just don't pack the same punch. By taking it, it helps ward of postpartum depression as well as helping you heal, in general.

Maybe it's a commonly done thing & I'm just unaware, not having spent a whole bunch of time around pregnant ladies?
It's increasingly common. There are people who eat the placenta as is, I believe. And some who have it turned into a decoration of some sort. I forget where I saw that. I'd like to forget more :/
It isn't very common. Most find it weird. But as charlie.m stated, it is becoming more common. But it once was extremely common and other animals still do it. It is part if the purpose of the placenta. It feeds baby. Once baby is born, momma nurses baby but she needs nutrition. The placenta provides that nutrition. It's very logical to eat it.
And truthfully, there are a lot of things about pregnancy that no one talks about until you are experience it first hand.

I ate my own placenta, does that count? I also bite my cheeks and inevitably swallow some.

I had it dehydrated and encapsulated. Took it like a pill. My burps tasted metallic. But they kept me happy.
