If tomorrow the media and social media ceased to exist and we all just dealt with the people in our own community would we be less divided?

I tend to agree. However, my observation is that the politics (in the widest sense) of small villages can be pretty damn nasty.

True, it's a lot more personal. In my town parking is very limited and there are constantly little wars going on between people that'd you never know about driving through. Passive aggressive shit like slashing tires or blocking parking spots with garbage cans.

  • It's not even a debate, the answer is straight up yes. If information was distributed fairly and not for a quick buck then there would be a chance but as it stands now the media establishment has blood on it's hands.

Uh... over here it's straight up no. The divide has already been established. There's no going back.

Instead of 30 second segments they should have two mature people sit down on tv both with differing opinions and have them debate the issue. You dont cut them off and you just let the viewer decide whos right.

You're looking at the problem at face value, if you want division to cease to the large extent it has then you need to identify where the root is. Who is orchestrating it? If you can follow the trail to the center then the division will cease. At least before someone takes their place.

      AAAAAAAAAAAAh, now we're getting somewhere
At the same time, part of the fighting is caused by nobody actually listening, but just wanting to be right and to be heard, ad hominems and name calling for having opinions is very divisive

Absolutely. People go to places that confirm their bias and that's all they listen to. The world would be a much better place without mainstream media.

100%. Main stream media, atleast in the U.S., is desperate for eyeballs, "if it bleeds it leads", was the mantra forever. Social media algorithms have figured out that people will focus on things that give them anger or joy. That is not to mention foreign actors infiltrating and manipulating social media.

I feel that way too whichever side you watch they gasloght the other side. Often times about petty things. Almost seems intentionally to divide.

The answer is it happens faster with Social Media because people tend to weed people out based on what they share there at times and that same person may take years to share it offline if at all

Nothing would change where I live. Nobody talks to each other here, we just stay in our houses & maybe at most wave at one another when we go to/get home from work. I've lived in the same house since I was 8 & I've never even laid eyes on 4 of my 6 of my neighbors let alone talked to them or learned their names.

  • Where I live, people are pretty crazy. If the media stopped existing, we'd be at each others' throats over something else silly in, like, 3 hours or so? I shudder at what kind of kookie, homegrown conspiracy theories might crop up in my county.
