Would no more internet improve society?

I had a work colleague who was debating this. He's curious if the internet was completely shut down, would that improve society as a whole and make people in general act more decent again? My personal answer is no, humanity and decency is already too far gone and nothing now can really reverse that whether the internet is shut down or not. What are some of all your thoughts?

it would be nice to get rid of some of these garbage websites where all the low-grade sociopaths and other degenerates allow their mental illnesses to fester - IIN for example. I personally would not miss the internet at all, this coming from someone who has been pretty much addicted to it for around 14 years. Life was just fine without it.

Unfortunately, the really depraved losers will most likely come up with a work around, if this were to ever happen.

Well there will be positives and negatives.

The nagative; nothing will be at your fingertips anymore. You'll have to go out and do your shopping again, go to the library, read a book, etc etc

The positives; the end of instant gratification culture, end of mass hysteria and sensationalism of every global event, end of extreme political internet blogs. And... people will be forced to talk to eachother again, instead of being glued to their phones.

So basically, we're going back to the 90s... which tbh everyone seems to want right now anyway, given how romanticised to fuck that decade is.

Yes the 90s were a bit different. Back then, I would talk to people on the phone, and hear their voices. Imagine that.

      Are the Nineties romanticized? Seriously?

I just about remember the Sixties, and they weren't nearly as cool as some people today believe they were.

You know you're getting old when decades you clearly recall as being shit in many ways are romanticized.

The biggest 1990s groups we were all into were Nirvana, Nine inch nails, Red hot chili peppers, Smashing pumpkins, Guns n Roses, and Metallica. What about any of them are romantic? Romance of a decade often goes along with the music of the decade

"Romanticised" as in fondly remembered (probably with some rose-tinted goggles) rather than being like "love" romantic.

          It's something I've seen a lot lately

Oh. I think we've all had our moments of looking at the past with rose colored glasses, particularly looking back at our youth. From what I've seen and know, the older one gets, the more it happens. I remember as a kid, my grandfather always telling me stories about how wonderful it was being young in the roaring 20s.

As long as there are KFCs, there will be obese families tossing chairs at each other.

Life before the Internet was stifling, and confining. While you were roaming the countryside, you felt imprisoned. Now if you have an Internet connection in a prison cell, you feel liberated.

    • I disagree. Back then roaming the countryside you actually felt more free, because you didn't feel like almost everywhere you went that someone could snap a photo of you and post it on the internet.
You didn't have people almost everywhere with the ability to watch your every move and look up anything they wanted about you at a push of a button.
Identity theft was much less common. The days before the internet were more liberating.

I spent a fair amount of my youth roaming the countryside, and I definitely never felt imprisoned. Nor do I recall feeling stifled or confined in what probably seems to you to be ancient times.

I strongly suspect you're not old enough to remember life before the internet.

I remember internet free life. Tree climbing, rope swinging, field frolicking fun.

And a few years later it all went downhill when I bought a pager.

        • I think humanity was better before the internet, but I don't think it will get better now if the internet stops, the damage is too far gone.

And, there is no way the internet is really going to stop. It was another global revolution. It would be like getting rid of all cars after inventing cars and going back to horse and carriage.

No internet at this point would fundamentally alter societies around the world but it wouldn't change human nature.

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • Yeh, major changes to society are completely irreversible once they've happened. People are too far changed now to ever go back to how they once were. If people tried to change it by taking away the internet or whatever else they try to do to try and reform society again, all people will do is either rebel, or just completely ignore it.

The internet is a tool, just like a hammer, screwdriver, cars even, etc, all items that were use to struck and kill other living beings when their purpose were meant to assist us. It's not that the internet has corrupted society, we as a species have always been corrupt. Moving backward will not solve anything, but limit us without the money, status, and resources to progress; and with the knowledge we know now, people will rebel and find someway bypass anything the government setup.

Sorry man, I'm pro-internet and all the complicated bullshit.

I understand. The wrong people have used the internet in the wrong ways, and if it wasn't the internet, it would've been something else. Guns were supposed to be manufacturered for hunting and protecting yourself and loved ones, but we already know how the wrong people have used them.

If the internet did shut down, there would likely be those people who would set up some kind of workaround illegal internet system, or black market internet or whatever they'd want to call it. It's like during prohibition, alcohol officially became illegal and what happened? There were plenty of people who then decided to bootleg alcohol and keep it coming under the table. Anything that has had a major influence on people and society whether it's alcohol or the internet, it's then impossible to completely stop it whether it was 100 years ago or now.

The internet is shit. I would love to go back to single line rotary phones with no answering machines so people can't bother me.

Return to days when you could write a check and the store didnt actually know if you had money or not.

Only hear about stupid libtard celebs from doctors office magazines. I could go on all day.

    • Yeh, life and people were more simple. You could write or cash checks more easily without the strict bs, of course like with many things, you can thank all the stupid people who did things to make nobody trust each other anymore. Airports security, you once didn't have to take your shoes off, you didn't have security patting you down assuming everybody might be a terrorist, and family and friends could walk with you to or greet you right at the gate. Again, you can thank all the idiots who got their orgasms sneaking bombs onto planes, hijacking, and deciding their own way to get rid of the two tallest towers in New York and permanently altering the so loved and well known Manhattan skyline.

Long ago, only happy talk was socially acceptable. With the Internet, anyone can be an asshole. I quite like the freedom. Assholeism, is the new way the world works.

          • That's very true, I've noticed how much bigger pricks people in general are now than they were just two years ago. It's Trump, he basically gave the official OK to Americans to go ahead and be as hateful as they want to each other. He officially made being prejudice more acceptable again too.

Firstly, I cannot criticize Trump too harshly. As a billionaire, he is higher in the food chain than I am. What confuses me is that while he is living in the White House, he acts like he lives in his Mother's basement. Crying, pouting, stamping his feet, bragging about his power. Shesh. Ruling the world from your Twitter account is not how it should be done.

    • Even though I still stand by my other comment above, I do agree that it was more of a pain in the ass if your car broke down on the side of the highway when you would have to hitchhike or walk to the nearest gas station to call the tow truck, where now you can just pick up your smartphone.
