Would it be weird to reach out to an old teacher on fb?

So I struggled really badly in junior high and this teacher was really understanding and overall really great. Of course I was an ass at the time and didn't appreciate it. Part of me wants to message her on FB and tell her thank you but I don't want to be weird. It's been 12 years. I'd like her to know her efforts are appreciated but don't want to be stalker like.

The teachers I had at school were not too bad, the people who thought I was a loser were my parents, till her dying day (4 years ago) my mother still told people that I was a sweeper upper in some grotty factory. I was until retirement 3 years ago a senior aerospace quality engineer earning about £2,000 a week, not bad for a total failure!

That's really weird. Why do you suppose it was like that?

        I was probably a mistake.

      That's seriously fucked up.

The reverse of what your mother did is more common. If she'd told everyone she met that you were the head of engineering design for Airbus, that could have resulted in some embarrassing moments for you. But people's self-esteem and self-belief can be permanently damaged by parents who don't believe in them and constantly understate their achievements.

I can't see anything wrong with you contacting your teacher to express your appreciation.

Some people go into teaching because they need a job and teaching is the best-paid option open to them; good teachers want to make a positive difference in their students' lives. But if they teach in a big school, it's rare for them to see their former students after they've moved on, so can be difficult for them to believe that they're making any difference in the world.

That's a big factor in teacher burnout and why they can become cynical and uncaring. The faces in front of them regularly change, but after a while, it's just a constant stream of kids who are confused, uninterested or obnoxious in varying degrees. A good teacher will try to help as much as they can, but it's always difficult to remain motivated in any job if you hardly ever get any positive feedback, and teenagers are generally so utterly self-involved that they aren't particularly good at giving that.

Something you need to be aware of is that the teacher will have seen a lot of kids in her career before and after you knew her. She was clearly important to you, but that doesn't necessarily mean that she will remember you twelve years on.

It ain't stalker behaviour if you're reaching out once to thank someone, eh? Especially a teacher. Teachers like that sort of sentimental bullshit. It makes 'em feel like they made a "difference".

DO IT! I'm sure the teacher will greatly appreciate it.

Not weird at all. She'll probably appreciate it. No, she still won't have sex with you.

    • Well I'm a girl and so is she and I'm not a lesbian lol. Plus she was older back then and probably at least 60+ now so it would be a bit weird.

Don't be shy do it. But of course you shouldn't do it if you're not very keen on doing it.
