Worried about friend who enjoys animal slaughtering videos

My friend confided in me that he enjoys watching videos of animals being slaughtered, such as videos showing the details of all the way down the line at the pig slaughterhouse. He also enjoys watching African safari videos of lions attacking and eating gazelles, zebras, and warthogs, with the animals kicking and screaming. It seems like he's liking watching all of that. I realize that slaughterhouses are legal, and he's technically watching people just doing their legal jobs, but to watch them out of pure enjoyed interest? I'm worried about him, is there something wrong with what he's doing?

I've seen that show a few times... Full of sickos. Adult babies, sex with objects, people eating clay, idiots that identify as an attack helicopter...

I understand why Elon Musk wants to go to Mars... If he needs a spaceship pilot, I'm game.

It's been established that sadistic serial killers and others who engage in violence against people often enjoyed torturing and killing animals when they were young. Jeffery Dahmer is a prime example of this.

Your friend hasn't gone that far (as far as you know, anyway), but lack of any empathy for the suffering of animals can be a sign of psychopathy, and I think you're right to be concerned about him. Is he also generally lacking in empathy for people?

It's difficult to suggest what you should do about this, other than keep a close eye on him.

    • He's never laid a hand on another human being, nor any domesticated pets, he's got a dog that he's great with and has never harmed. I was confused because people sometimes see it as nothing wrong with watching people get killed in movies, even if they're real life murders in the movies, but then if they do them themselves, they obviously go to prison. My friend has never harmed an animal himself, he's only watched the African safaris and slaughterhouse stuff but nothing ever where domestic animals are getting harmed. YouTube posts these slaughterhouse videos and he says that he knows watching those videos are not illegal, but I'm not completely sure.

The videos are of things that are completely legal, so why should watching them be illegal?

I still think it's a peculiar thing to be fascinated with. I also think there's a possibility of escalation to wanting to watch weirder stuff and then to seeking out real-life experiences.

        • I didn't think it was illegal, but it could give off the message that watcher may be ok about animal cruelty. Most people I think aren't going to end up actually doing things they watch on videos.

Morally speaking, he is doing nothing directly contributing to the harm of the animals. The slaughterhouses will continue slaughtering animals regardless of what he is doing. Predators will continue to hunt prey.
While I would watch him a little bit in case his interest grows into anything more serious, nothing he is doing now is immoral or on shaky ground.

He’s not doing anything wrong, he might have mental problems buts still. I watch African safari videos of lions attacking and killing bison every great once in a while because it’s interesting to see nature at work, but I don’t watch the lions rip them apart or anything, if he’s doing that to, he needs medication. Well he still need medication if he “only” watches pigs being slaughtered.

You should lead him in the right path maybe get him into some counselling or tell his parents if you are truly concerned

To be honest I don't feel much for animals when they die now I would say that there might be something mental behind it but it's not a big deal.

what is the real truth? is it about figuring out what is going on? or is it about animals being hurt. that is the big question. i mean i love animals way too much. i would love to see the big corporations be over, but it would take so much for that.

    • The slaughterhouses and meat distributors in America will never go out of business, about 80% of Americans are meat eaters. Could you imagine walking into every grocery store and seeing all the meat under cellulite sections all gone? Or every restaurant in America being vegetarian?

    • That is pretty sick and disturbing when you word it that way. It's African safari animals and farm animals only. He'd never enjoy watching domestic animals like cats or dogs being slaughtered, and I'm certain he'd never never ever enjoy watching people being slaughtered. He's got his limit, I've known him since childhood. He used to go hunting rabbits with his dad when he was a kid, he'd ask me to come along but I didn't want to. Americans really have never looked at killing animals for food as animal cruelty, we've been doing it for centuries, hunting animals for food, rugs, fur coats, and animal heads displays on walls. It's really all old fashioned tradition.

African safari you can understand. It’s wildlife. Slaughterhouse videos seem much more sadistic. It reminds me of an amazing podcast/short story I listened to recently where a girl who works in a slaughterhouse becomes addicted to watching ISIS beheadings. Really good...

Story starts at 55.30 *WARNING* It’s pretty graphic.

  • Don’t be too alarmed. People think it’s abnormal to enjoy those things, but it’s really not. I enjoy watching animals eating other animals too. To me it’s kind of like watching a football game. I watch to see if the animal being chased is fast enough to get away, and I normally root for the predator. I have enjoyed watching slaughter videos before, but that’s not as good to do, as it makes me feel a little crazy afterwards.
You only really have to be worried if he starts watching graphic videos of people getting killed or abused. Then you should notify someone. Sometimes people watch that stuff out curiousity, but making a habit of watching murder or suicide means there’s something wrong with you. Out of curiosity once I clicked on a video of someone slowly having their head cut off, and it traumatized me. It wasn’t quick and the women was crying and gagging and moaning in pain. I didn’t finish the video and I started shaking and crying and felt like I was going to throw up. People think what happens to animals on factory farms is so horrible, but really other human beings get it a lot worse. I’ve watched animals die without even blinking, but that video still scares me even thinking about it.

    • I could never watch what you watched with a person getting their head cut off. My friend wouldn't watch that either, he's not that disturbed. He wouldn't watch domesticated animals like cats or dogs getting killed either. It's only African safari animals and farm animals at the slaughterhouses. I still was concerned about him liking them. He is sure that watching slaughterhouse videos on YouTube is legal. I'm quite sure, but not 100%. I guess those videos are just of people doing their jobs at legal facilities. But, you're still watching farm animals being slaughtered. And the safari lions killing warthogs videos, some of them had English or American voices watching it from their jeeps and exclaiming their excitement, and I seriously doubt that they're gonna go to jail for that when they get back home when people around them see them getting excited on their YouTube videos watching the animal killings and acting excited. Same with my friend watching the slaughterhouse videos, he's not watching anyone doing anything illegal. But I'm still a little concerned, because he's watched a number of them, and I'd been with him when he was watching them, but I didn't enjoy them like he seemed to.

      • Yeah, I’ve only watched farm animals being killed. A cat or dog would make me cry. I only watched the killing thing on accident because I’m stupid and I didn’t think it was going to be that bad. I really wasn’t thinking straight.

        • I would never watch any video of a person, or a cat or dog being killed. I did watch some of the safari and slaughterhouse videos with my friend. Like I said, he liked them, I didn't. I was asking you cause I just want to be sure, is it legal watching the safari and the slaughterhouse videos on YouTube?
