Word pronunciation

A lot of people where I live pronounce picture as " pitcher" like a water pitcher.
I say " pic-ture".
Is the c silent or not ?

Is It Normal?

  • If you invest in a dictionary, it will give the proper pronunciation of every word. Regional pronunciations are not necessarily correct, but often accepted.

    • It says " pic- ture" is correct but a certain person I know still insists pitcher is acceptable.

  • They may THINK they're pronouncing the 'c', but some accents slur it into the rest of the word. But no, the 'c' is NOT silent.

  • Oddly is seem to me that it's the T that easily gets lost. When I say it it comes out like pic-chur, or even pic-shur if I'm talking fast.

  • same as people who say liberry for library... I always though it was because certain combinations of letters are difficult for some people to say. it's almost more like a speech impediment that way. although I've not heard other words containing "ct" said that way as often as i hear "piture", so maybe it's just something they learn or like a dialect.

But depending on where you live many words can be pronounced differently
