Woman casheir smiles at others but not me

If you were getting helped by cashier, and the cashier woman smiled to customers in front of you, but did not smile at you, would you let it bother you? Would you ask her about it in a serious way showing her you didn't like it? And don't say that cashiers don't pick and choose which customers to smile at because some really do. If you saw a cashier smile at customers in front of you and not smile at you, check the box on how you'd take it.

You'd say something to her in lighthearted way, not letting her know it actually bothered you 5
You'd let it bother you, but you wouldnt say anything to her about it 13
You'd let it bother you and seriously question her about it letting her know it bothered you 3
You wouldnt care and wouldn't say anything 32
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

I would prefer she didn't smile at me. I must keep my lips pressed together and nod because my teeth look terrible.

It's probably your mannerisms. I use to work in customer service, and you can spot the customers that would take a good customer service as something more; a lot of girls just refuse to engage in a friendly manner if they sense something troubling.

Sadly, the fact that you're so worked up about something so small means you probably are someone who would take good customer service a bit too far.

Really. This op is so bothered about whether a stranger smiles at him or not that he's putting a whole post up about it with multiple choice and all. Seriously? Has he ever dealt with any real problems in life? Or she, I don't know if this op is a he or she, but either way, who makes this kind of a big deal about a cashier not smiling at them?

A highly sensitive person who is very insecure would be my guess. And if that's the case, no comment here is going to help them out.

Why should you care whether someone you don't know smiles at you or not?

My name is a combination of Allen and Michael, they are both either my first, middle, or last name, that's the most I'll disclose

Oh. That's cause my name is more plain and boring than yours.

    • You mean the cashier? I seriously doubt that, this has happened from numerous cashiers, and they don't appear autistic at all.

I don't understand why this op is worrying about some cashiers not smiling at em.

It's not that rare. You would be surprised how many people doesn't have a life (myself included). Just go to places like /r9k/ or r/incels. The autism of some of this persons is funny as fuck.

It might bother me a bit man. I'm sure if you smiled at her she'd probably smile back. Did the guy infront smile at her first or make good small talk etc? I really wouldn't bring it up to her, that just seems wrong. Who wants to live in a world when we're someone's trying to force us to control semi-conscious body expressions.

Is she really attractive? How do you look at her? If you are oogling her, or trying to hit on her then one can't really blame her. Do you look at her like a piece of meat, and check her out? When guys do that they are practically asking women to scowl and hate them.

I would feel the same way perhaps. I almost take everything even little strange against me. But i shouldn't and you shouldn't. What other person does or acts, it doesn't define what you are. I have a problem sometimes that when someone smiles at me and i want to smile, my reaction doesn't come quick. And sometimes when you smile to a lot of people, you might get tired for a while.

I've noticed how some people might act, look or talk to some people prior to you and that experience is different.

Could be she feels uncomfortable due to her not knowing you and you could be around her age, she could like you, she could not find you attractive and it's just business as usual ... the list goes on. Who knows.

Next time smile, say hi and get your wallet out and pretend you're busy ready to pay up. If she doesn't say hello back then she's just a horrible employee. There's no excuse for not saying hello to a customer.

I can't stand it when you say hello to someone and you're lucky to get a semi smile from them too. It's almost worse than holding a door open for someone and they act like you don't exist while not saying thanks. People suck

As a previous cashier, maybe they thought you were cute, and didn't want you to notice. Maybe they were just tired of fake smiling and you happened to come to their line at the wrong time. Maybe they were thinking about something and forgot about their customer service duties. Or maybe they just didn't like the way you looked or something... Or maybe the cashier was a butt for no reason. Usually when I get one's like that I ignore it, or if I want to make them feel bad, I say hello and ask how their day is going (Kill 'em with kindess).

    • It's probably most likely either her getting tired of fake smiling, or it's her not liking how I look. That was one of your listed possibilities, and I've been told I'm not the best looking. I don't think how someone looks should give someone an excuse to treat em differently, but not everyone agrees with that thinking. We are in a prejudice world.

A cashier makes minimum wage and their job is just endless, repetitive scanning of peoples junk food. I'm surprised any of them can smile. Either way, this is about the last thing you need to worry about.

        Comment Hidden ( show )
      • Alichael

Yes, that's true. But don't worry about some cashier not smiling at you, or worry about why she's smiling at someone else and not you, that's trivial shit that really doesn't bother most people. You notice how many people checked the box that says "I wouldn't care or say anything" and how many people checked the box "it would bother me and I'd tell her it did"?

Demand to speak with her supervisor and get her fired for giving you the wrong look.

Why would you want to cost someone their job over something so trivial? Maybe she needs that job just to make ends meet and feed her kids? Maybe it's her second job and then has to go to a third one, just to put food on the table?
Man, some people are just plain mean. Unless she cusses you out, just take the fucking items you've purchased and go about your business!

Thank you. Someone not smiling at them is just not something any stable person makes a fuss over. I see the op hasn't put in any more disputes on this page about this, and has seen all these people's responses and finally gets it.

Most supervisors are not going to fire an employee over one customer complaining about her not smiling, especially if she's someone who has been getting good words from people about what a great worker she is, even if she hasn't. It could happen though if the employee has already gotten other complaints from customers and/or other co workers about problems she's been having, and her job's already hanging by a thread.
