Will i lose weight ?

If I burn more calories than I eat will I lose weight? I thought I would but someone said to me that your body will start storing fat if you do that.

How can you possibly store calories as fat if your diet and level of activity means you're consistently burning more calories than you consume?

In order to store excess calories as fat, there have to be excess calories.

    • Or sugar.
Or white anything (except egg whites).

Eat a shit ton of bread and you will gain weight regardless of how much you burn

White bread is the WORST for losing weight. I cut it out of my diet last year and lost 30 pounds

Well say I burnt 2000 calories a day... and ate 1500 I’d lose weight if I kept that up over time right?

Of course. The 500 calories has to come from somewhere.

It's sort of like having a full tank of fuel in a car, burning 2 gallons on your daily commute, and topping the tank up with only 1½ of gallons of fuel every evening. Eventually, the tank is going to run dry.

Absolutely dry. But I think this guy is saying the car's mileage improves when the tank is half empty. (By analogy, he is saying your metabolic uptake slows down under caloric deprivation). I don't think that's right either. At least Alice is doing the math. Good on ya, Alice.

But apperently if all I eat is carbs and fat and if I burn 2000 calories and only eat 1500 then I’m still going to put weight on

No idea if this true all I know is sometimes it seems when I eat so much I end up losing a lot more weight then when I eat less but I guess it depends :/

If you stop eating, your body will absorb calories from the air making you obese.

I will debunk a myth here; you don't need a specific diet to lose weight. You can eat ANYTHING you want. Even a cheesburger everyday. What matters is the amount of things you eat.
You need to eat so low that you're using more energy than you are taking and storing.

Not all calories are created equally. Also, if you are stressed, you will hold onto stored fat regardless of how many calories you burn. Calories burnt does not mean you burned fat. We live in excess. You need a balanced diet with sugar only coming from fruit and minimal carbs unless you plan to use it by being extremely physical.

But don't torture and deprive yourself as that will only increase the stress levels that make your body hold that fat.

Also this is not true for every body. What works for you may not work for me or any other helpful advice giver. Learn the difference between craving sugar and craving nutrition. Learn what it means to be nutritionally satisfied. If you eat a balanced diet, you won't crave food near as much.

Hi! And I feel like I’m still being told two different things.

So if I burnt more calories than I ate.... but what I did eat was only fat and carbs I wouldn’t lose weight ?

You would lose weight but it would be mostly muscle mass. You'd be skinny but weak and unhealthy

You are looking at it the wrong way. You want to use the calories you consume, not just burn them. The fat slows down the burn rate of carbs so your energy will last longer and you will have a better workout. Carbs aren't inherently bad for you, but you only need them if you plan to use that energy.

There is no simple formula for all people. You still have to put out more than you consume, but you need the energy to actually move your body.

Try not to focus on the food so much. Eat whole food and exercise regularly and you will lose weight...but only if you actually need to.

It’s because I’ve got a Fitbit and I am currently ‘burning’ or using more calories than I’m putting in

Have you ever seen photos of the people in the Nazi concentration camps. How much fat did their bodies store?

I think what the person probably meant was, instead of trying to lose weight, you should focus on changing your body composition. You can eat enough calories to maintain your bodyweight, while losing fat and gaining muscle mass, if you eat enough protein and train/exercise enough.

It is possible to lose weight and increase your body fat percentage at the same time, but it's usually a result of losing muscle mass and not losing fat.

Is your aim just to lose weight in general or to be less fat?

Think of it like pouring water into a bucket which has a hole in the bottom.
If you pour water in faster than it drains out, the bucket will over flow. This is weight gain.

If you pour water in slower than it drains out, the water level will go down. This is weight loss.

If you pour it in at just the right rate, the bucket will remain full with the same amount of water. This is what happens if you eat as much as you burn.

Weight loss is a very simple equation. If you burn more calories than you eat then you will definitely lose weight. People get confused because of all the other factors that come into play, eg processed foods being high in calories but not satisfying hunger, certain foods causing blood sugar spikes and cravings, fast food addictions, hidden calories in processed food, poor diet causing low mood and therefore low energy so not wanting to exercise and reaching for comfort foods etc...

But at the end of it all the equation will still remain the same - burn more calories than you eat, and you will lose weight.

Of course burning more calories than you eat will shed some pounds. As long as you're not starving yourself, you'll be fine!

The first couple weeks of a diet/exercise program you might actually gain a couple pounds but then after that it starts to come off. Just don't panic if you notice that happening.

Just don't eat for 45 days straight. Great results.

Good idea only that you might be dead before 45 days

That wasn't the question, chief. The question is will you lose weight? And the answer is yes.

        • Not necessarily actually.

It depends what the person eats. If you decided to eat a tub of ice cream, even after burning off the calories you ate, it's still possible the sugar from the food will turn to fat and be stored.

Feel free to correct me if I am wrong, but that's what I've been told.

Are you talking about the post or this guys comment about not eating for 45 days?

But! It does bot actually matter what the person eats, it only matters how many calories. This reason for common confusion is because foods like ice cream have more calories for how much they fill you up.

But if you eat 5000 calories a day of ice cream, lemonade and pop tarts, but you burn off 5500 calories a day, you will lose weight. You will feel like shit, be malnourished and starving, but you will still lose weight.

I swear I'm not mad and its common confusion so don't think I'm pissed. I do know I am right however, I can show you research or explain more in detail if you want but I'm an exercise science major(3rd year) and person trainer who studies nutrition so I know what I'm talking about.

That’s what I was told if you eat shit and still burn more than you eat you’ll still gain weight

              Comment Hidden ( show )
            • Hey, no hard feelings at all! I've just been always told that if you eat poorly. Like the pop tarts and all, you might lose more bone density and muscle mass, as opposed to fat, which you want t o lose.

I'd love to see your research! Sounds like a fascinating read!
