  • This post is a special case, and I feel that it's good to give people a place to vent and discuss without flooding other posts and causing other disruption.

Making registration more difficult would cut down on spam a little but, but I think it won't help as much as you think. The really annoying folks are quite motivated and will use throwaway email services and other tactics to get around most basic requirements. It won't stop them. This new site has some other behind the scenes mechanisms to combat trolls that I think will prove their effectiveness over the coming weeks. But it'll take a bit of time.

The layout is more or less finished. I'm fixing some minor bugs but the major structure is in place. Search and comment editing will return sometime in the next week or two.

I'd love to hear feedback. I assume people are mostly referring to the mobile layout, which is now a responsive version of the desktop one and not a separate jquery mobile site. The new one is MUCH faster and simpler in a lot of ways. But it is quite different. I hope that as people get used to it they'll see the merits, but I'm listening and can definitely adjust things if any particular pieces of it are hard to use or hard to navigate. Thanks!

--Then don't allow throwaway domains to be used in the email field? Send verification links to emails before the account is usable? Yes there are ways around that but it would greatly deter some of these one-handed typers if you get what i mean. Mainly you need better moderators. Why not hire volunteers from this site whose accounts/IPs are in good standing?

--You mean like stronger filters and commenting time limits? Don't get me wrong those are good ideas if you could limit them to just affect trolls. I don't really think "karma" is going to help you there, as long as you have these idiots playing around with proxies as you can see with the excessive negative votes directed towards specific users and excessive positive votes on the same 3 accounts with the same writing styles.

--No were mostly referring to trolls, who give a fuck about the damn layout when you haven't solved the main problem yet
