First of all I would like to disclose, I am an idiot. I do not claim to be some economic genius.

But wouldn't it make a lot of sense if the USA shifted its manufacturing needs to Mexico instead of China? You could kill several birds with 1 stone. For one you have access to cheap labor. Two, you make Mexico wealthy which will in turn stop the majority of illegal immigration. Why would they come to an english speaking country if their country had good jobs? Three it makes more sense logistically, Mexico is right there. You dont have to get these products over such a vast ocean. You can bring products here by air, truck, and trains. You would also in turn make Mexico safer because people would have more opportunity than being in the drug business. It would actually even be good for drug cartels because Mexico would be a better market to sale their products. All around the board it seems to make more sense.

    American politicians at top levels of government do not work for the American people. They work for whomever lines their pockets. If you're asking why something is the way it is and it never changes no matter who gets elected, it's because Congress is morally bankrupt.

      When nearly every corporation makes nearly everything in China it makes it damn near impossible to change in a corrupt environment. The corporations who pay the politicians will tell them not to move to Mexico. Its too good for business in the short term even tho its shooting yourself in the foot long term.

    A lot of American Companies did shift manufacturing to Mexico.

    Many of them found that they could not control the quality adequately - and moved their manufacturing elsewhere. China will manufacture to the quality level you require (if you have adequate inspectors in the factories).

    Mexico is sooooooooo corrupt. Like unbelievably corrupt on a criminal level, with things cartels just rulling the roost in a lot of areas. China doesn't really have that + I think China has great infastructure.
