Why is there a double standard when it comes to age gaps in relationships?

  • Pretty much. It's probably rooted in our natural instinct for the male to procreate with fertile young members of the species, as long as he is capable. Older females, who had already been mated and given birth, perhaps many times, were no longer fertile and of no interest to the male. Of course, eventually a slightly younger, stronger, and more virile male will challenge the older one, and often drive him out, where he is left alone or accompanied by an older female, and they die shortly after. It's called "nature".
