It's due to basic biology. Women are on a short biological clock, whereas a man's SMV peaks at something like forty.
People should be able to do whatever they want, but there's an innate biological/evolutionary reason that it's seen as odd. A 30-year-old man going out with/ marrying a 45-year-old woman will very likely fail to have children, and thus in a basic evolutionary sense fail to spread their genes.
Whereas as a 30-year-old woman partnering with a 45-year-old man will still be fertile, and find a partner who's established in his field, still fertile, and capable of providing.
Why is there a double standard when it comes to age gaps in relationships?
