Why is it wrong to think you should know english if you live in america?

I got a horrible haircut by a "professional" stylist, I got the the worst haircut of my life by a woman who could barely speak English (I think she was Russian) she spelt my name wrong like REALLY wrong and then cut my hair shorter than I asked for and gave me bangs I specifically told her I didn't want! I understand English is hard but at least while learning don't get a job where talking to people is an important part of it.

I don't understand why people think it's okay to live in America and not know the languange. It's like moving to France and calling the people racist because they're annoyed by the fact you can't speak French.

You're right. There's no advantages and only disadvantages that come with drastically different cultures living together. Successful immigrants in the US all have one thing in common: they embrace American culture.

Integrating would be a better word but yes, adjusting to the country you move to is highly advisable. Not even knowing how too communicate is really bad.

This simply isn’t true. New York City has a lot of successful immigrants from several different countries that haven’t particularly embraced American culture, or each others’ cultures. Dearborn, Michigan has a thriving Muslim community that it would be a stretch to say they’ve ‘embraced American culture.’ Chicago has a lot of successful immigrants. Florida, Texas, and California do too.

Successful immigrants do have one thing in common: they go somewhere where white people are open minded, they don’t expect immigrants to ‘assimilate’ and open their arms to different cultures and ideas.

I think Elon Musk, an immigrant to American from South Africa, sums it up quite well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFYnEYkWljI

American culture is one of self-made success, freedom of speech, of religion and liberty. Using Dearborn, Michigan as some sort of example of success is hilariously wrong. Unless of course you're an advocate of Sharia law: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6QC_qEyl0Q

Sharia law btw, isn't quite compatible with Western values. Islam has no freedom of religion, freedom of speech against Islam is not tolerated, and women are not treated as equals, but as subhumans.

I honestly don't want people coming here who don't care to assimilate!

If someone is learning the language, give them time. I met a hot, latino woman who used to work at the sports bar I go to, for drinks last week, at her frequent request. I like her, she's beautiful, sexy, and taking English courses at the community college. Is doing well, but, doesn't know some words, and you need to speak slow English when with her, but..She's learning and getting there. Give people time to catch onto what you've known you're entire life.

I really hate it when people come here, and don't even try to learn English! I don't think it's wrong to think people should learn English! My maternal grandfather came here from Colombia when he was like maybe 60 years old, and although he kinda came off as not really speaking a lot of English he probably understood a lot more than he could speak. When my grandfather died I saw all of his note books where he had been practicing, and writing English, and it was very inspiring to me. I get very frustrated with much younger people who are in their prime who don't even freaking try to learn English! I think everyone should try to learn a second, or even a third language, but here in the United States there's no excuse for people not learning, or at least trying to learn English!

I’d love to see the notebook you’ve been using to learn your local Native American language.

It's probably extinct by now, because the people to whom it belongs are too busy being addicted to the fire water!

I'd rather learn Spanish and German! Besides, the OFFICIAL language of the land is English.

  • Getting a haircut messed up by someone who can’t speak english and didn’t do what you said, that’s not right. She shouldn’t be working in a area needing english, and haircutting you need communication. I don’t see her being able to last when she can’t do her job right but maybe next time around she can improve both haircutting and language skills, or maybe the language was the only barrier to a good cut?

Anyways where I’m from I don’t deal with many foreigners and don’t usually have anything to set me off. It is nice having to call a company and understand them because so many Indian accents are everywhere and I can never understand what’s going on.

Getting Chinese tho that’s understandable. Some Americans work their and always get the order and my name perfect. But a good chance the ching chongers get the name so weird it’s like pretty much random letters. They did get my order wrong last time but corrected it. At least here they know how to speak English it’s just not in full sentences but enough to understand what they are saying, that’s obviously much nicer.

I'm sure the people you are referring to can speak their
native language better than you can speak yours.

I'm interested to know, can you speak more than your native language? even enough to get by in a foreign land?

  • It's not wrong or racist.

Language is obviously crucial to being able to run a business, or function in any meaningful capacity in an environment with other humans.

Fun fact: France has an official language. It’s French. Funner fact: the United States doesn’t have an official languages. There’s a couple hundred indigenous languages that were spoken here for thousands of years before English.

If you didn’t get the haircut you wanted, that’s a problem, and I would agree that there are certain jobs - and stylist is one - where one has to be able to communicate.

Last I checked, America had no official language, because around 40% of Americans are 2nd generation immigrants from South America.

It's annoying when someone can't speak the language of the country they live in.

However, in this case, it sounds like maybe she's just a really shit hairdresser regardless of what language you're speaking.

Had some German woman call in and complain to my manager a month or 2 ago. I discrimated her by talking to fast when we were insanely busy and in rush mode, by not asking her if she wanted a bag quick enough. Yup. Then near the end the store got a call and as a cadhier it's my job to awnser the phones Nd she was yelling and frankly for minium wage I dont give a damn shit so i awnsered the phone and ignored her. Haha that pissed her off goood

    Yes, it's a reasonable expectation.

But what are they meant to do to earn a living while they learn? They've got to take what jobs are available.

Talking to people is a crucial part of a lot of jobs.
