Why is Africa still poor after all these years?

  • That's probably partly right...you can compare it to depressed regions in otherwise prosperous countries. The upwardly mobile people can and do leave, leaving behind the less able (but not necessarily less intelligent...just less financially able, less connected and less formally educated...less powerful) which only makes the problems there worse. I don't think the answer is to stop allowing immigration though because that doesn't solve the underlying problems as to why people are wanting to leave in the first place. Why do people want to leave? With Africa, a lot of the problems come from colonization, borders, disease, hunting vs agriculture, the size of the continent affects trade, etc. It's far harder to make it as a person even with lots of advantages so leaving is a better option. Making it better or easier to stay would be ideal but how do you do that? You are up against dictators, borders, natural resources, climate/terrain, a different mindset. It's complicated.
