Why don't more people believe in the bible

It says that the earth is round and suspended in space somewhere in there. I'm a bit confused as to why so many people write the Bible off as just stories and God as nonexistent, when there seems to be irrefutable evidence.
I am not Christian, but I am wondering why the Bible seems to be often disregarded when it seems to have a lot of proof of the existence of God, apparently a lot of prophecies in it were fulfilled.

  • It actually doesn't make much sense at all. I could believe some of it is based off something. I could believe in the possibility of a God. But if there is a God, the bible is not accurate. It has been changed many times. Many of the stories are obviously made up. If any of it is true it is at the least heavily altered. Many of the morals are actually immoral and anyone who can think for themselves can see that. It was never moral to have slaves and beat women and persecute opposing beliefs. If an all powerful God even created those rules, that is not a morally correct God which simply proves the Bible contradicts itself. The argument that things are ok if God says they are proves that people are brainwashed to not have their own opinions.
Some of it is possible. Assuming if anything is possible, then perhaps it is, but it is not morally right regardless of what others believe, I can at least know that.

  • The Bible is full of stories, that is undeniable. The question is how true are they, personally I find it all to absurd to think the whole thing is anything other than a bunch of fairy tales but each to their own. Sure there are things in there that are true most novels have things that have some factual bits in them, that's why authors do research. Doesn't mean the story is true though. For example there probably was someone called Mary who had an illegitimate kid called Jesus. Just because her husband was a dumb carpenter who was to stupid to realise she had been unfaithful to him, and believed some story about an immaculate conception doesn't mean the little slapper was telling the truth.

If an all knowing all powerful being that created the whole universe had a book made on which all of humanity would base reality and morality on for all time, shouldn't it be crystal clear and not full of immoralities, contradictions and open to different interpretations? Its pretty obvious it's just a fictional book written by a bunch of men.. There already is overwhelming Scientific evidence and Philosophical arguments to disprove the bible, koran etc..

The book of Genesis really sucks. It completely ignores the Big Bang, and skip to 4 billion years ago when the nebula the became the Sun hit temperature pressure to trigger thermonuclear fusion. Then there was light. Before that there was only starlight. There is no mention of protocells, or evolution. On technical merit, the Bible is dumb.

If a Grand Cosmic Consciousness exists. It's much different than descriptions in the bible.

The bible actually says that the earth is flat and immovable and seperated from the waters above by the firmament of the sky.

Doesn't help that it's been rewritten a bunch of times. A book that needs to be rewritten has lost any value if you ask me

If you actually read the Bible, you would know why less people believe in it. Don’t read it for facts. It doesn’t have any. Don’t read it for a moral code. It advocates violence, slaverly and murder. Read it cause we need more atheists

Alot of people on here saying "it's made up" i'm no Christain but have you ever heard of fables? It's the moral of the story, a hare didn't really race a tortoise, just like Jesus didn't feed the 5000 but we learn something that hopefully makes you think about being a better person!

Like I said I don't do religion but I think if you're that way inclined these days, you don't take it so literally and just use it as a tool to get whatevef you're trying to get out of life? Just a late opinion.

i like the part where my science teacher said in the beginning before time existed nothing exploded into everything filling the darkness with light . he sounded like a goddamn fucking idiot. But we all sat their like it was brilliant after all he was holding a science bible written by McGraw and Hill.

Religion has caused a lot of wars, I think that if more people were to believe an opinion rather than a fact there would be chaos and the world would wreak havoc.

"It says that the earth is round"
Actually it does not. It uses the expression "circle of the earth"
But the word "the earth" means "the land", it does not mean the planet.
So, the verse about the circle of the earth is irrelevant to whether our planet is flat or round.

It is erroneous to believe that ancient peoples thought we lived on a flat world that was not round, especially people who lived near the seas. They saw ships disappear from the bottom up as the sailed away, and they saw ships appear from the top down as they approached the land. So they had clear visible experience that out world was round.

About the Bible, the Bible is a part of the religious tradition of Judaism and Christianity. It grew out of them. To know the Bible well is to know our civilization better. And it has a strong effect on many people who read it well.

"I cannot imagine a God who rewards and punishes the objects of his creation, whose purposes are modeled after our own -- a God, in short, who is but a reflection of human frailty. Neither can I believe that the individual survives the death of his body, although feeble souls harbor such thoughts through fear or ridiculous egotism." [Einstein]
"Faith means not wanting to know what is true." [Nietzsche]
"I cannot believe in the immortality of the soul.... No, all this talk of an existence for us, as individuals, beyond the grave is wrong. It is born of our tenacity of life – our desire to go on living … our dread of coming to an end." [Edison]
"The Bible is not my book nor Christianity my profession. I could never give assent to the long, complicated statements of Christian dogma." [Lincoln]
"Religion is a byproduct of fear. For much of human history, it may have been a necessary evil, but why was it more evil than necessary? Isn't killing people in the name of God a pretty good definition of insanity?" [Arthur C. Clarke]
"Religions are all alike – founded upon fables and mythologies." [Thomas Jefferson]
"Say what you will about the sweet miracle of unquestioning faith, I consider a capacity for it terrifying and absolutely vile." [Kurt Vonnegut]
"Religion is based . . . mainly on fear . . . fear of the mysterious, fear of defeat, fear of death. Fear is the parent of cruelty, and therefore it is no wonder if cruelty and religion have gone hand in hand. . . . My own view on religion is that of Lucretius. I regard it as a disease born of fear and as a source of untold misery to the human race. [Bertrand Russell]

I myself am an atheist and as shown in these quotes, it is not a new concept. Like most everyone else, I would love to believe in an afterlife where we retain our personalities and live in paradise with our loved ones for all eternity. But that shits not the truth and has no basis in reality. This is only my opinion. If others want to believe and it gives them comfort then I see no harm in it. Except in the case of violent fundamentalists. Islamic, Christian or otherwise.

If earth is flat, explain night-time. Explain time zones. Explain to me that despite the numerous trips that certain explorers have made to Antartica, e.g. Michael Palin, nobody has "fallen off of the edge" yet.

Come on, explain all 3. I'll wait.

    • I said, it's written in there somewhere that the Earth is round. Considering how old the book is there's no way people back then would have come to that conclusion on their own. But if someone has any explanation for how this is in the Bible i am all ears

      • No, you said exactly this:
"I am wondering why the Bible seems to be often disregarded when it seems to have a lot of proof of the existence of God"

Now show the proof from the Bible.

Again I ask for the chapter and verse where it says that the Earth is a sphere.

I can assure you that you won't find anything saying that in the Big Book of Jewish and Christian Myths.

There is nothing in the Bible that supports our present understanding of cosmology or basic physics. Ever heard of Galileo Galilei? In 1633, the Church branded him a heretic because, based on his scientific observations, he stated that Earth must orbit around the sun. The was deemed heretical because the Bible implies that Earth is at the centre of the cosmos and a unique creation of the Great Sky Fairy. The Inquisition - who were experts in what the Bible actually says - gave Galileo a choice: voluntarily recant or be tortured until he did. (It was only in 1992 that the Catholic Church finally accepted that Galileo had been right and pardoned him.)

Here's something that definitely is in the Bible: in Joshua 10:12-14 it states that the sun stood still in the sky for a whole day so the tribal war lord Joshua and his troops could have more time to engage in holy slaughter of non-believers. True Believers have been tying themselves in knots for a few centuries trying to explain this bullshit, but the fact remains that it is simply impossible.

If you want to believe the Bible is holy and every word is literally true, you're free to do that. As long as you don't insist that I accept your mythology as fact, you can believe whatever you want. But maybe you should actually spend some time reading the book rather than saying "it's written somewhere" when making a claim.

People back then knew the earth was round because when the saw the boats leave the harbor the could see them disappear over the horizon because of the roundness of earth

I was a christian, catholic and everything else together...When i saw what was going in the churches around this nation i started looking closely at the bible. Many good and bad things but what about the people before the bible? They believed in god or gods. Did god appeared to them to let them know that there was a god? Apparently the cosmos or starts had more influence that a god or gods. All this appearances by the virgin, god, jesus, the saint and the whole gang seem to be an infactuation or dreaming about this things. I was in coma at one point in my life fir 4 days. The only thing i can tell you in that i wanted to be where i was asap. It was peaceful and I remember telling the world that everything was going to be ok. At that place someone told me something in my ear. Who was? The stairs and the light at the end of the tunnel was real.

So was this a dream or what? But as far as god existence i can not say that is real. The bible talks about give and you shall be given, sorry but I don’t give and I receive......and so on....many realities contradict the bible...and as of todays churches I reserved my comments. No I don’t go to church and you will never see me in one.

Chapter and verse where it states that the Earth is a sphere floating in space? Maybe you can also find the one where it says that we orbit the Sun.

Pretty basic facts that you think an omniscient divine being would have mentioned in passing to one of his minions at some point.

I have never read a bible & I am still vague on any kind of proof that god exists (as stated in bible) ... But I think there exist a thing which have the power to control some other things. That "thing" is still a mystery & will remain that way...idk if its god or not but there's gotta be a explanation for that

Lol I know bible exists. & you are not the first one to tell me that fact. My uncle even suggested me to read it & I have a copy at my home. But i don't get that if people read bible a lot then why do they critisise it & curse it,if they don't like it then they shouldn't read it. I think people should be reading books like "subconscious mind" or "the secret" hell even harry porter or Gatsby might work.
Besides I am not much into those things in which majority are.I don't like any marvel or DC movies (except dark Knight)
