I think a large part of it is due to money. Nowadays, most record labels care more about making a profit than the quality of their music. Society has also gone downhill in many places, so this could be a by product of that. Another thing is Grunge. I was told that grunge was so depressing and sluggish that it caused music to swing in the other direction. This was pop music. People wanted to have happier music and be happy. Then it evolved to what it is now. In terms of auto-tune, we can blame this on Cher. Cher had a song that utilised auto-tune. The song was great and was a huge hit. Before this, no one used auto tune. After it became a hit, everyone wanted to have that sound.
I do think that the time of rejoicing has come because, there are some musicians/singers who are making good music. Of course, these artists seem to be independent of the mainstream corporate label giants.
