it seems that once people enter their 3rd year of college they all have the need to settle down in a relationship. Shouldn't we be getting to know all different types of people when we are young and free? Hell I know a few couples that got together in their freshman year. Why do they do this?
On what basis do you think they're not in love? I met my fiancé in my second year in college. Four years later, we together, we love each other very much, and we're very happy.
Why do you think they'd all have the same reason? People are different from each other.
How do you know they haven't gotten to know many different people first? Even if they haven't, does it matter? You don't have to know what the full spectrum of human behaviour is to fall in love with somebody, or even to have a healthy romantic relationship. You will never reach a point in your life where you know all of the different kinds of people.
Not all of those relationships will survive, but you don't have to think you'll be with somebody for the rest of your life to have a relationship with them. There's something to be said for getting some practice. This is the main point of dating when very young, such as in high school or even middle school (though it's worth noting that 21 is NOT a young age to be dating). It lets you experiment, learn the ins and outs of relationships, and (hopefully) gain confidence).
You don't meet a spouse or life partner by waiting around until you know all the possible options. You do it by trying different things, some of which will end disastrously, until you find something that works. Besides, not everybody is looking for something that serious. Some people just want to have fun and have some emotional support.
If you're not ready for a relationship, or if it's just not what you want right now, that's fine. But seriously, stop judging your peers for doing what they feel is right for them. You don't know what's right for everybody.
It's different for everyone, but you do have a point. Some people have a girlfriend solely because they can't stand being on their own.
Some of my best friends have had year-long relationships. They're completely sick of their partner, but they don't want to end it because they hate the single life. Kinda sad, really.
Anyway, you shouldn't be bothered by how other people treat their love life. You should live the way you think is best.
Okay, some couples may be in love, but the idea that they give each other "emotional support and have fun" is ridiculous. They fight, cause problems for each other, and have a lot more fun with their friends.
The problem for me is that I feel pressured to be in a relationship, and if I'm not, something is wrong with me. But I don't want to be with an unattractive available "good" girl with a nice smile just because my friends are coupled up. Why can't we all just date different people and test the waters? Being in a relationship is stressful 90% of the time for everyone I know.
And dating in high school was not anything like dating in college.
Why would you even feel that way? Do what you feel like doing. Even if 99% of the people around you follow certain path, that does not mean you are bound to do the same. Learn to be the exception and follow your own heart, even if what nobody expects as it breaks a trend. Screw what all others might think and do what you truly want. You don't have to behave like sheep. If they are in a relationship for some reason, whatever this might be, let them be. You don't have to do the same thing just for the sake of fitting in. Be free!
College is where many, many people meet their future spouses. And why not? It is a pretty good bet that you'll meet someone who is intelligent, committed to higher education, has a work ethic and career goals, and, where you can get to know their values and interests in a relatively role relaxed environment, etc..
It is not the only place people become couples, of course. But compared to bars and workplaces etc it is not hard to see why the old joke of going to university to get one's MRS - though dated and sexist (from a time when women were not expected to work outside home) has a ring of truth.
