Perhaps there was a time when mankind had a shortage of rocks, so to increase hunting efficiency and decrease stone usage, we decided to kill two birds with only one stone. And maybe some guy decided to spread the word about this new way of hunting to the next village and so on.
I'm not entirely sure. There's something called a "Pie Bird" and there is a very old nursery rhyme called,"Sing a Song of Sixpence" where a king has 24 blackbirds baked into a pie. Shepard's Pie often contains chicken. The only other birds I can image being made into a pie are duck and goose. I think with other types of birds like Pigeons, there's too much of a risk of deadly infections for them to be consumed.
You put a cooked duck in it and press....like a wine press or an olive oil press. I don't know why but it came to mind when I responded. It has a spout on the bottom and duck juice comes out as you screw down on the duck carcass, I find it gross. I am not fond of duck, so duck juice is not appealing at all.
Some birds have eaten pigeons. You can pretty much eat anything on this planet aside from thinks like blow fish. You can even eat a snake though I am curious how they do that without getting poisoned. You can eat monkeys and crocodiles and buffalo though a lot of them have gone extinct in most places. I think you could eat something like lions and bears if you were willing to kill it.
Why do they say "You can not have your cake and eat it to"?

That seems plausible. They could have made a lot of bird pies from the convenient huntings.

I have had chicken pot pie, I wish I hadn't, though. I did forget to mention it and I have had duck as well as goose.
