Why do some telemarketers call obsessively?

They follow a list of phone numbers right? Or names?
So why do some of them keep calling like five times in a row if you dont answer? And why do some of them call as late as 9 PM and such? The last time I answered one who called obsessively like that he sounded very unprofessional. He told me his name like I already knew him, and only first name which is odd, and didn't tell me which company he was calling for until I went "yeah? and who are you?" and then I just hung up. Same number kept calling but next time I picked up didnt say anything, just hung up on me. I've noticed many telemarketers hang up when you pick up actually, but most of the time I dont even pick up I just immadiately block the number after having looked it up. Makes little difference though as they seem to have different numbers to call from. Or I just make fun of them when I pick up, like making a weird voice and telling them i'd like to order a pizza or something. That makes them so uncomfortable they don't call again but others always do.

As far as the mystery of calls where the caller hangs up when you answer are concerned, I think there could be a couple of things going on.

First, my understanding is that call centre dialing is often done by a computer working through a sequential series of phone numbers, and it's initially looking for active numbers where a call is answered; these go on a list which a call centre employee will deal with later. I believe some call centres also have systems which automatically dial and keep a certain number of answered calls queued up for the drones to deal with since the company doesn't want to pay people to just sit around listening to ring-tones. Sometimes the algorithm gets it wrong, and a call is answered but all the minimum-wage schmucks are already busy pestering people, so the system just terminates the call.

I live in the UK, and there are pretty strict rules about telemarketing here, so it isn't the total pain in the backside that it is in the USA. If you don't want to get telemarketing calls, you can add your phone numbers to an official list, and companies that call numbers on that list can be fined and suffer other sanctions.

The only unsolicited calls we get on our landline and mobile phones are from Indian call centre scammers. Most of the time I just hang up on them. But if I have nothing better to do, I engage them in conversations about things like whether they believe in karma, how they have to know that what they're doing is dishonest and theft, and if they think they're going to suffer for that. Asking them if their parents know what they do for a living and if they're proud that their son or daughter is a thief usually gets a pretty dramatic result.

And who knows? Maybe it could make them reassess their life-choices.

The only thing that I can provide an answer for is on why they call so late and why many hang up as soon as you answer.

The night-time calls are usually from telemarketers who work from home. These people make money based on a per-sale basis and those who work from home are going to work as a long as possible.

The "immediate hangups" are usually from people using your voice as a way to judge whether or not you're idiotic enough to buy into the scam.

I stopped picking up those calls. I was told when I answer it, it lets the caller know that it's an active number and they'll call me even more once they know this. I only get spam calls like once every few days.

Most of these calls come from Scammers.

I no longer answer the telephone unless I recognize the name or number. I let them leave a message.

Because I have 4 different businesses I have 4 active cell phones and 1 landline at my house. Each phone gets an average of 3-4 calls a day.

Someone leaves a real message about once a week.

I worked a call center type job before, I was literally trained to use some of these bad habits. I would sometimes call the same number 4 or more times a shift, which is just weird and awkward for most people. Surprisingly enough some people still responded to my calls and I managed to schedule a few successful appointments by using this method. Just a number’s game I guess lol.

I definitely get why people find this kinda thing off putting since it felt pretty crappy making these calls in the first place. I guess that’s why I’m just not salesy person lol
