Why do people still by diamonds?

People still buy diamonds. Why? Do you not realize what the diamond trade is doing to the world?

First For those of you who are just concerned with what affects you, do you not realize diamond exchanges like De Beers hoard all the diamonds they can so they can artificially inflate the prices? To the tune of 100 to 200% the intrinsic value. As soon as you leave the store with a diamond it loses a minimum of 50% of it's value. Diamonds are not as rare as they would have everyone believe. Hell, we can make diamonds in the lab now.

Also in the late 30's De Beers even started a new trend in diamond rings, the engagement ring. And every year they try to do the same thing with different types of jewelry.

For those who can see past themselves the whole legal diamond industry still fuels the illegal diamond market. African conflict diamonds, also known as blood diamonds, are sold on the black market to support warlords. These warlords will roll into a village and kill anyone who fights, enslave the men to pan for diamonds, rape and kill the women, take the boys and turn them into more soldiers and take the little girls and turn them into whores.

I've always thought people spending so much money on diamonds are so fucking stupid. Giving away money you spent months working hard for to buy something that you can't do anything with except stare at and go "Oooh, pretty". What kind of a moron does that?

Why are you going to get chipped? And just to make sure we are on the same page, you want a e-tracking chip surgically put in your body, right?

The CIA has already installed a micro-chip in your brain. They do it right after you are born. I'm amazed more people aren't aware of it. It cannot be removed, only de-activated. Sort of like Facebook. Big brother is not only tracking your movements, but your thoughts as well.

Perhaps my new chip will interfere. The CIA can track me if they desire, espcially that cute girl from Blindspot that left the FBI to join them.

Cute new girl? Blind spot? FBI? I need more info. As for the micro-chip in our brains, it cannot be de-activated except by specialized personnel. I know one in my Michigan Militia but he charges buku bucks for his services. He's de-activated all of our members, all 15,000 of them so we are free to roam Michigan's woods, with our massive amount of military hardware. Firing at will. So your stuck with it. I do wish you and your special someone all the best though!

Diamonds are worth whatever people will pay for them. I mean, yeah, they're a bad investment but if you want one, you'll pay for it. I don't personally like them but I can see the appeal, they are pretty like any other gem.

You can't really lump all diamonds together though. As a whole, they are not especially rare compared to other gem stones but the larger nice specimens are rare. Certainly some diamonds ARE worth more because of their actual rarity. And De Beers doesn't control the market anymore. Like 30%, but the new guys are rolling with the prices because they can, because people want them. If people feel it's worth it, what do you care?

I really don't care about the cost. Didn't you notice the barb in the beginning or that paragraph? About people only concerned with what effects them. All diamonds have their intrinsic value inflated. Irregardless of size, color and clarity.

I never said De Beers controls the market. If you read it again, I said "like De Beers". I was using them as an example because they are the most recognized exchange.

And again, I don't care about the cost. Did you not see the part of my post about the murder, rape and slavery? That's the part I can about. But, by your post, I can see what your concerned with.

Well, you asked why people buy them. They buy them because to them it's worth the money.

Uh, I wrote it in my previous post and I reiterated it since it seemed to go unnoticed. Your asked why people buy diamonds as if it's a big mystery, it's really not. It's pretty easy to see why people buy them. Even if I personally do not like them and am aware of the price situation, I can still see the appeal. If people feel it's worth it to them, then whatever,it's their money, what should I or you care what they spend it on?

People like the prestige or some shit. And don't know/care to know about the dark side of the diamond trade.

My "engagement" ring cost me $30USD and I bought it ten years before I met him. It's pretty, I like amethyst. I don't like spending ridiculous amounts of money on something that doesn't really matter. But to each their own.

  • The epitome of humanity's stupidity- that's the diamond industry. Other pointlessly cruel things we partake in are fur, ivory (pisses me off the most), and silk.

The amount of people who don't even care enough to acknowledge that this is horrible is disappointing, but not surprising. Hopefully, they're too broke to buy diamonds.

Silk? Please explain how worms spinning silk is cruel?

      Comment Hidden ( show )
        -
      • The worms must be boiled alive or otherwise killed during the extraction of the silk. Most people think, "They're just worms, and can't feel pain".

Idc, it's still just another pointlessly cruel product, that has little to no practical need in modern society.

On the subject of silk their is a man that has created genetically engineered goats that produce spider silk in their milk. He them separates it out and spins it. Soon the silk worms used to make silk will be obsolete.

I hate the ivory trade. Scrimshaw can be done in bone without the need for ivory and the amount of cow bones produced every year we can easily afford less gelatin. Fur and leather I use. I do believe if we kill an animal for food we we should use as much of that animal as we can. I have deer, rabbit and squirrel hide around my house because I killed the animal for food and as I said I try to use as much of their gift to me as possible. Leather I buy, because it lasts a lot longer than some of the cloths they make in sweat shops.

      • wigz

Right on about fur and leather! Nothing compares to the real thing (utility, not just fashion) and absolutely, if an animal is killed, you should use every part if it.

        Comment Hidden ( show )
      • I do agree that you should waste as little of an animal as possible.

When I said fur, I was thinking particularly of special furs. For example, the otters of South America were hunted to near extinction for their furs.

To many species are hunted to near extinction just because some petty pampered self-absorbed rich multinational thought the animal had a pretty coat. "Hey, those dalmatians would make a great coat."

Actually I own gold coins because I hate the fiat money system used in the US. I have a ton of Sacagaweas too. Money is no longer just paper. Money is more a digital concept that it is "real". But since you couldn't understand the part about how bad of a investment diamonds are I wouldn't expect you to know something like that. Hippopotamus.

Paper, diamonds, gold, sea shells, digital records, at the end of the day it is all just worth what we as a society decide it is worth. Gold is a just a metal. That being said, it can certainly be obtained by far more ethical means than diamonds, so I don't disagree with your post.

Diamonds and gold are generally bad investments. DeBeers has the diamond market cornered. Governments have the gold market cornered. Neither investment pays dividends. These assets may be good during times of hyper inflation or war.

Yes, I was wrong. Since 2013, DeBeers share has slipped to 39%. He still has considerable influence as a market maker, but is unable to keep prices where demand elasticity is unitary like a true monopolist would do.

You can own diamonds if you want. I am not interested in an investment unless it generates revenue. The following link about the diamond industry is an interesting read.
