I lie because I can. It helps me get what I want. Growing up with divorced parents who always made me pick sides showed me that if lying saves me trouble and the result is the same, why would I not lie? That eventually spread to lying to avoid trouble and lying to sound cooler and now I’m so good at it that it comes out more naturally than the truth does sometimes. Also, if you can’t remember your lies, you can’t lie. So people also lie because they have good memories.
I do that now because it just comes out half the time. If you lie enough, eventually you like lies more than you like the truth. I only tell people I care about the truth, everyone else basically receives lies. And even the people I care about, I lie to them more than I should.
In my case at least. And from what I read that seems to be the reasoning for most compulsive liars (there’s a difference between pathological liars and compulsive liars)
