Why do people get mad when they receive gift cards or candy for christmas?

I notice this on Christmas or on birthdays. People just act like gift cards and candy are the worst thing to get and whine about it. I don't get what's so wrong about gift cards or candy. I recieve gift cards and I find it fun going to different stores and using toward things I want. When I get boxes of candy, I will scarf them down happily. Since no one in real life can explain why they hate them, perhaps some lovely is it normal users can explain it?

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

Complaining about gifts is generally lame... unless you were getting socks from the discount bin.

I think a gift card is quite a considerable gift, cause you can't know what your friends have and don't have. So you get them a 50 buck gift card for an electronics store and they can buy a thing, or add the gift card to some saved cash for a more expensive thing they wanna buy.

    It’s just bad manners.

They probably just want a super personal gift and might not like sweets. But how you describe it, people must be very ungrateful and stupid

I love any sort of present - money, gift cards, candy. But I can see why people wouldn't like it. I've seen people get upset over being given money (wtf) because it's a thoughtless, worthless present, especially in wealthier households where money is normal. Same with gift cards, it's essentially giving money and saying, "I don't know what you would like and quite honestly I don't care." And of course, same with candy, because who doesn't love candy?

Christmas is for material goods. Candy is what you give to children on their birthday. Christmas is for personal gifts rather than general gifts.

Ive never had this happen. Some people seem not too thrilled about getting clothes...they are just rude and ungrateful. Dont get them anything then.

I prefer gift cards. Thd type of people who buy me presents dont really know what I like or need. That and I don't like gift exchange in general. Anyways for me just get me a gift card if you must get me anything

I think people want the instant gratification of gifts.

I always said " thank you" even when my crazy aunt gave me her old clothes that didnt fit me, from the 1970s...

Except in rare circumstances like vintage items that someone wants, yeah, giving used items is tacky.

But yeah, used clothing from the 70's that don't fit - tacky.

My aunt was tacky embodied. Lived in a leopard-theme trailer with a big bar and pictures of Tom Jones with his chest hair sticking out. Blurgh.

candy is a cheap option that is why. and gift cards there is no thought put into what the actual person wants -- however i actually agree with you and i would rather a gift card to go shopping with instead of some trash i have to look happy about receiving that i dont want.

I've never understood gift cards. Why not just give the person money? That way you spend less, and they can use the money wherever they want.

Nothing wrong with giving $$ but some people like surprises or putting a personal touch.

I've never noticed anything like this. I've never given away gift cards but candy however and no one has seemed upset about it. I like gift cards, but I do prefer cash.
