I think a lot of guys have the very much mistaken idea from porn that a guy can just cram his dick up the ol' poop-chute and pound away at will. Unfortunately, unlike the vagina, the anus and rectum are not self-lubricating, and this means anal penetration can be an uncomfortable and even painful experience for the woman if she also isn't aware that there's really no such thing as too much lube when doing anal. (And BTW, if you end up sore after prolonged vaginal sex, it sounds like you could use some lube for that too. There's no shame in that. Even if you remain very aroused mentally and have repeated orgasms while the dude is thrusting away for hours, if you get dehydrated, then the amount of vaginal secretions you produce is going to decrease.)
Like I say, some women really enjoy anal sex. I think that's not only due to how people vary in what they find erotic, but also because of physiological variation in the genital-anal nerves. Some people seem to just be wired up so that stimulation of the anus feels very nice, and others aren't.
As for why so many guys like it, I suspect that's partly due to it being so common in porn that it has become "normal", and partly due to them getting a kick out of violating a taboo that their Mommy put in their heads when they were very young.
Like I said, I've never enjoyed it, and that's primarily because the main sensation for me was of the tight ring of the anal sphincter gripping my penile shaft; I felt nothing much at all on my glans, and that's where most of the nice sensations happen. Basically, it felt much the same to me as masturbating, and a woman can replicate those sensations with her hand without all the hassle of lube, going very slow, unpleasant smells and sights and the associated embarrassment on the part of the woman.
I guess my mother just didn't work hard enough when toilet training me to instil that taboo about anything to do with bottoms and poop.
